I know, sorry I wasn't more clear. I was just making reference to the difference of getting a dangerous shot, verses "after the fact" gore shots.

Saying that, we had a motorcycle fatality wreck here a couple of years ago that was so bizarre I was glad someone took the pictures. I won't post the pictures but one can google Tulsa Motorcycle Wreck and see what I'm talking about. The guy got his head stuck in the truck trailer.

I know thats why the safety laws at my local track are there but they seem to over do it in the fact that they usually wont allow tethered equipment too close either...

sad thing is the camera whent flying up in the air and did not survive, the photographer now uses diposable cameras.

Uhh... I think these images prove why they strictly enforce "safety crap". If they didn't then photogs would want to stand on the edge of the pavement at every track.

Lol well I would say that to get a good shot you have to be in a good location. Well it seems that half the time that is on the outside of the turn where all the cars would wreck.

When I was watching a rally race up a mountain the people would run out on the course in the middle of the road after the car went by...probably pretty easy to hit someone standing in the middle of the road :)

kyoshinikon....that's a shame they won't let you close. Don't give up, keep searching for a contact at that track who will give you the access you need. I have found it hard to get the track officials to give me clearance to shoot. So I normally go to their marketing director and get my access from that person, if you're willing to share your pics with them. Also, marketing directors will normally let you in free.

Very true. Iv'e seen spectacular crashes that I've flinched (stopped shooting) at because of how I saw the victim's impact.

What is annoying about my local race and drift car tracks (Willow springs)is the safety crap they enforce so strictly. Once I got booted for standing too close to a tethered camera (like 12 ft away!) When I asked If there was an insurance contract I could sign so I could shoot wide they gave me (I swear it was rehearsed) "Your safety is our number one concern, and we have the right to keep you safe". I have a feeling there was a lawsuit a while back!

he is using a super tele. the close focus will be a couple of metres. af-c will not be able to lock on a car going 200km/ph that is heading straight towards you 10,5,4,3,2,1,0 metres away.

if he had a superwide set up in that exact spot on manual focus remote trigger, then he would have got the best shots, and not risked his life.

but then he would have had to use the power of his mind to make the car crash exactly where he wanted it to.

It's amazing how far car safety tech has come so that these drivers can just walk away!

I have experienced that impulse of taking the shot vs the hit, albeit on a lower scale of risk

Vest colors represent different media credentials and track access.

Here's the only video of the second big crash. Almost identical to the first but at a faster speed. the driver wasn't seriously hurt.
