I wouldn't get your hopes up Shivaswrath... Until recently, it was very difficult to find even a D40 in that price.

let's not forget the D3000 won't have a video function, will have 3 AF points, and will probably not be as "nice" as the D5000 in the way of features. . .for me, as a vacation body, and given the fact all my lenses are AF-S, the D3000 is a perfect fit for something fun and small. . .I can't wait for a Xmas sale price of $399 with a rebate or $499. . . .

If they go any lower than $600, they would probably cannibalize their D5000 sales, at least i can't think of a feature set that would be on the 3000 that would make the 5000 worth any more than $200 difference. The key differintiator is likely to be a reticulating screen and better auto-focus.

If you buy the day of a release, you'll probably get a decent price. High demand items will sometimes spike shortly after release if Nikon underestimated the demand (35mm f1.8 for example). We haven't seen much movement on the D5000 price, and I expect the D3000 will be the same.

I would say it should be around $500, which was the price of a D40 when it was somewhat new.

I don't think this will happen. I mean, the D3000 at half the price of the D5000... I would imagine an initial price around $600.

By the way, the D5000 is down $100 in the US already. I guess you can expect a small decrease in the price after a few weeks.

Haha, moregan17, I wish I owned the car in my username. I really don't have a car at all. :D But I am a diehard Honda fan.

Back to the main point, you're right, you should buy the camera for your needs. I just feel the D40 isn't adequate for me anymore. As long as you feel the D3000 is good enough for you, that's all that matters.

Just remember the D3000's specs and name are so far just projected, they may not turn out the way it is. We'll just have to wait and see.

Nikon is currently giving 75 Euros cash back for D5000 in most of Europe, but it was overpriced to begin with.
I doubt D3000 will be half the D90 price, but you have the point, you really do not need to pay more for D90 if you don’t want to fiddle with image settings.
And for the price decrease expectations, usually you should not expect one for a new model at east six months after its announcement.

Hey NSX. first of all good username, i drive an s2k myself:D

about the camera: i really think the d3000 will be a great camera, and I also don't think an amateur like me needs anything more than an entry level camera. While there are nicer cameras on the market, I know I'd never get more than a d90, and the d90 is simply not worth double the price to me. I believe you can take a great picture with any dslr also.

agree with NSX - body prices are unpredictable, with a general tendency to drop the price over time; also You will always find some sale around xmas

Nope, not predictable to be honest.

Take the flash SB800- it increased in price even when the SB900 was available. Weird. And there are factors that you cannot control- for instance, Nikon increased the prices of everything out of the blue to adjust for the depreciation of US money.

I haven't followed the prices of the D5000, so I can't tell you how much it's changed though.

On another note, I noticed that you have a D60 from your post in the other thread. Are you sure you want another entry level Nikon?

I have a D40 for a little over a year now, and I feel like I'm ready to move up.

Hey NR,
finally registered here, sometimes I post on rumors as MikeO

I am in line to pick up the d40 replacement camera. For now I'm assuming this is the d3000.

How do the prices of newly released camera bodies usually move? Is it predictable? Is it like lenses in the respect that they are often marked up upon high demand upon release? How did the d5000's price change since release?

I'm wondering if perhaps I should wait to the holidays to pick up my new camera, as Nikon might put on a sale/rebate offer.

Any advice on getting the best price would be appreciated!
