Fireproof please do a forum search. There are lots of "what should I buy" threads that cover the D90 versus other models. There are also several threads discussing the 18-200.

IQ might be OK, but you find the focusing slow and I don't think they have VR.
Second hand is allways going to be pot luck, but I bough my 18 -200 on e bay with out problems

Firstly i agree with u guys , is there anything specific to look for in a used camera. By now i have found few D90 sellers who also have warranty but the price difference for those used cameras vs the new one is around 150-200 $, do u think i should still go for a used one when the price difference isn't much (Considering i don't know how the camera has been used )

Secondly what is there to look for in a used lens , kindly suggest some good lens for general purpose photography , which gives good results both indoors(low light) and outdoors , btw ken rockwell has praised the 18-200 mm so much despite its price tag of around 850$ that it was kind of a disappointment when i checked one out at a retailer yesterday ( i mean vs the price tag),so is there any cheap solution maybe sigma/tamron etc

I agree with Bjrichus, there is nothing to wait for as far as DX is concerned, and FX is going to be way out of your budget.

the choice of lens depends on what you are going to take pictures of. what may be good for some, will not be good for others.

18-200 is a good general, walk around or travel lens. you will add lenses as your intrest grow.

28 - 300 is a good FX lense, but a little long on the short side [sic] for DX, and then the price, phew, therefore sevencrossing's comments are spot on.

recommendations should really be made depending on your intrest.

buy now, with the trouble in Japan there should be some delay in new products being released.

Before I moved up to a D700 I had ( and still have) a D90 with the 18-200

It was, (and still is), an excellent combination

If I was looking for a DX cameras today I would go for a D7000 but a second hand D90 is going to be a lot cheaper

LessThanThree Leo, what exactly is "not good" about the 18-200. If you want a 10:1 zoom what else would you recommend, may be the 28-300

Spent the last 10 days or so considering the (many) threads on here in the wake of the latest Nikon camera release (D5100). It seems to have poked a bunch of people for whom video is a big deal, who are not primarily still photographers. There are also a bunch of people with Nikon DSLR cameras from about 2008, who are wondering if it is time to upgrade. Perhaps they purchased as a result of Ken Rockwell and his glowing review of the D90?

After all, the D5100 is a major step or two up from the D90 which will make them ask if its for them or is the Canon for them (both fits your budget). If they have money, they may wonder if the time is now for an upgrade to something even better. They will ask if they should wait ... just as you have.

My personal take on it, is ask yourself how long you can wait or if you need something now. If you can wait, you will be waiting for an FX upgrade as I think that is next on the list from Nikon. The 5100/7000 is going to be it for a while for the DX format (I did say my personal take....), so unless you want to spend $5k or more for FX, go for what is there now but just be prepared for the same debate when the D7100 comes out (who knows when), in spring 2013 maybe?

The 18-200 lens is not a good lens.

hi guys these days i m in a fix i want to buy a nikon camera and when i see the used market everybody is selling the D90 , so my question is why , and should i go for D90 with a good lens like 18-200 or should i wait , i also dont wwant to spend beyond 1500$
