Some of Japan is up 100% as are some of Nikon's sites. They also have manufacturing all over Asia that is running as usual. It is true that one of their main plants that produce FX gear is down for the count and will take a while bring back up or transfer production to another plant. Never underestimate how resourceful Japanese are in moving production. Their production lines are famous for being able to be transferred to other sites quickly.

Forgot to mention, there are no Nikon FX cameras coming off the line right now.

Don't be surprised if all electronics are affected...TVs, microwaves, etc.

I guess not only Nikon is affected, but all products that come from the affected areas in Japan.
Also some Nikon competitors face the same problems... (If I'm not wrong C*n also is made in Japan)

Let's look at reality:
1) If Nikon can retain all their skilled people,
2) If the factory is undamaged, and
3) If suppliers can continue supplying in pre-event quantities,

None of it matters. The factories are only getting 4 hours of electricity a day. For the foreseeable future, product will be dribbling out. And, BTW, we know assumptions 2 and 3 are incorrect.

So, I would be less concerned about rumors about new products. I would be more concerned with getting your hands on equipment that has not already been shipped from Japan.

Even the lowly Coolpix cameras have parts manufactured in Japan. Rumor is that Nikon is worried about supplies for Christmas.

Nikon is more worried about getting their company back to what the new 'normal' will be, than developing new products. Don't be surprised if we are still feeling the effects of the tsunami four years from now.
