Out of the four US Nikon lenses I own, only one says US in front of the serial number on the lens so I don't think it's mandatory to have the US in the serial number in order for it to be covered by the 5 year warranty. The lens itself should come with two warranty cards. The 1st year warranty card, you would keep with you and has the serial number of the lens on it. Make sure the serial number on your lens matches the serial number on that warranty card.

My 14-24 and 70-200 are both L at the front of the serial number, yet both are US warranties. So it doesn't require the US at the beginning. Looking at the warranty slip that came with them it has two in there, one is white and is for US warranty work the other is yellow and is a world wide warranty. The whole thing is imprinted with the serial number and model.

Well I just went to look at the warranty card, its blank, there is nothing there "yet" for a serial number. The card on the back gets mailed to a PO Box in Colorado. Thanks for the input anyway. Like others said, not likely that it will need service unless its my own fault anyway.

They are AFS/transfer the info. I can't see really anything that can go wrong as long as you don't abuse it with mud. They are built very well. Personally I wouldn't worry about it as it will probably outlive it's usefulness or technology will change before it goes bad.

Other than CLAs and having a very old 24mm 2.8D solenoid go out (I bet I was the 5th owner) I have never had any issues with Nikon or Tokina lenses. The only warranty items I worry about after a year are DSLRs. Just like anything, if it is going to go bad, it will do so in the first year (if you use it a lot).

Did it come with a warranty slip? If so, who's listed as the importer? (And does the serial number match?)

Mine does not have the "US" as well - but I have no clue. Bought mine used so I have to pay either way.

If you E-mail Nikon they are really good at answering questions.

do they have any moving parts to go wrong ?

or, should they last forever unless you drop them or they get fungus?

I just got a 1.7 TC-E. I bought from an offical nikon retailer, this is the first "glass" product that I have gotten that did not have the letters US in front of the serial number. Is this normal for a telecoverter, or are they not covered by the 5 year warranty.
