just like the HDR setting, its nothing special for enthusiasts, but really cool for amateurs.

True words indeed! If its the first time you've ever seen these effects and have low expectations, its going to be the WOW factor. If it sells more Nikon then it's not really a bad thing...

But...

How long will it be until we get daily threads asking how UNDO something after they deleted the original in the camera as it was "Taking up too much space on my SD card. Computer? I don't use one... Backup? What's that? I just go to WallMart to do my prints and then delete the files."

Last time i checked we were not allowed to link to commercial sites, review and news sites have always been allowed, has this changed?

Anyways, night-mode is probably similar to shooting at 12k and underexposing, then upping exposure in post. Not something you want to do, but i great idea in a pinch.

Has anybody come across a sample image of the D5100s Night Vision mode? I'm curious what a monochromatic ISO 102400 looks like.

There is a sample ... I recall seeing a shot of a squirrel using it earlier on today.

Can't find it just now!!!

Kind of reminded me of a noisy black and white shot.

As for most 'regular' situations, using ISO3200 will under street lights or perhaps one table lamp, will probably give better results, assuming as it has the same sensor, it behaves as per the D7000...

EDIT: imaging-resource dot com has some images in the gallery over and above the ones on Nikon's own web sites as well as a selection of test images some (but not many) at high ISO values.

EDIT 2: ylovephoto dot com have a dmovie of that squirrel shot using night vision mode, which if there really is no option BUT to use it, then you'll be ok, but it is noisy!!! The dmoive is actually at imaging.nikon.com - but of course, Forum rules say we can't post links to other sites here, so you'll have to dig for it. Sorry!
