Nikon really misses on anything that is not a DSLR.

It almost makes you believe that Nikon sees the mirror-less cameras as “I want to change lenses” instead of “I want the image quality of a dslr but don’t want to drag one around.” People want image quality of a DSLR – Not Almost the quality, THE QUALITY. m4/3 doesn’t get that quality nor will a smaller sensor. That small of a sensor is just not going to get them there.

For me, a camera has to be able to always get at least to 1600 with clean images with almost no loss of detail for it to be even in a DSLR league. There is nothing "Pro" about a 2.5 crop at all. Even the m4/3 at 2x are not close enough to a DSLR crop sensor.

(ok enough ranting on Nikon being unable to produce anything other than a DSLR or a lens. Back to playing with my files from my X100)

Guys...

It's not out yet. Please leave judgment until it's out yet. I agree- on paper, 2.5 crop does not bode well. I'm curious about the wide end- we'll probably see focal lengths drop below 10mm to be a true wide. But I guess wildlife photographers will love this camera? :D Stick a 600mm f/4 on it!

Who knows? Maybe it will end up like a Fuji X100 with changeable lenses. I'm being cautiously optimistic.

Don't know about the new EVIL system but it certainly has to be better than the P7000. I purchased this camera as my "take everywhere". Nice features, pretty good IQ but functionality leaves much to be desired and....its horribly slow. I normally shoot with a D700 and D7000 so perhaps my expectations are unrealistic but, if I were you, I'd wait and see what's in the pipeline.

Hey... I still have a Nikon Nuvis APS film camera doing it's thing as a dust trap on a shelf... some people will always buy toys like this just to see what they are like, huh?

One of the cameras I enjoyed was the Nikon 35Ti, a little blocky retro camera. Unfortunately it was stolen during a trip to Barcelona, over 15 years ago.

Such as things go, there were a lot of 110 cameras sold, and there are a lot of compact cameras out there, but that market is soon to dry up and go the way of the Flip videocam.

Too many cell phones have started competing successfully with compact cameras - that is happening and going to get worse. Nikon and the others just ought to get into bed with the wireless companies on that.

But a silly 2.5 FX for 'pro' use is a head scratcher.

My best,

Mike

I was watching a segment on Fox news last night shot at the CES show earlier this year and had to smile as a number of the devices they were featuring have already sink without trace and it struck me then. "Joe-consumer" doesn't care about IQ or Dynamic range or color accuracy... It's all about megapixels and special effects. If it's something he has seen used on a big TV series/film set, or the "rich kids" would use at a pool party in Beverly Hills, it's "in".

This is why I said to Niko earlier in this thread, that such a small device is not a pro camera. My wife who has some camera knowledge as a result of simply being around me (so I like to think anyway), realizes that small sensor = lower quality. Mike G responded to my comment about this and 110 cameras... it's not the D3 replacement, now is it?

While this is not the first time I have been surprised, if this ends up as anything other than an upgrade from P&S as an intermediate step towards a D3100 (will there be a D4100 or a D3200 or something else at some stage perhaps?), then I for one, will be very surprised.

Asking about quality of this rumor vs anything else is pointless at this stage, just wait for the thing to appear and then TRY IT OUT, which considering the panning it has taken in just about every forum I have read, it may never get beyond the Photoshop image leak stage. Then again, if the Beverly Hills brigade think it's "cute" you never can tell...

"There is nothing "Pro" about a 2.5 crop at all"

Hmmm.. i dunno . The images from the P7000 seems pretty darn good.. and the 2.5 sensor looks like its probably at least 2x the size of that p7000 sensor . ie equivalent image iq improvement between a 4/3 to a FF. Plus probably at least 1/2 a generation of Technical improvements.. I say it could be a great format! I have been playing with Live View form my D7000 and yes its not for sports shooters but its focusing is fast enough for most general shooting. I would guess that the focusing tech would be at least as good as that and I would be very happy with its performance. I would be more than happy to carry around a mini D3100 with permanent live view and iso performance equal to a D80/D90. (though I think the P7000 IQ maybe already beats the D80 ? )

+1

What is Nikon thinking?

Their pro base is DX/FX. If it wasn't for the extensive lenses that many have collected over the years, I suspect that the pro base would just leave - and this is from one of the fanboys who _defines that base_.

In another thread, Sprayandpray commented on the channel control Nikon is exerting now and I _feel_ that there is some profit manipulation going on in the DX area right now.

I don't know optics for crap, but I don't see how a 2.5 crop factor is going to do diddly for the pro market.

I'll like to see a more competitive FX channel.

(If TTJ can rant, so can I.) ;-)

{Hey, can I borrow your X100? Post some pix! And some vid!}

Yes Nikon is developing a new "pro" mirrorless compact camera with a new lens mount and lenses.

Niko... I think we might want to avoid use of the term pro in any way when connected with this rumor, unless there is any extra info about the IQ or DR that you know and we don't which might be very revolutionary indeed? The idea of getting even DX or (this is a rumor forum, after all), FX type quality out of something smaller than Micro/43 is appealing... if nothing else, for the lower weight, smaller size etc, but is this likely?

HOWEVER... My wife looked at the main blog post last night and said with a scowl, "This is a bit like saying a 110 camera is 'pro' quality." Now SHE really is a true P&S owner and if she can work out a small size = lower picture quality, then a 2.5 crop factor is a true fail.

Unless perhaps Nikon are looking to get away with some kind of fashion thing for the under 21's and make a killing on sales to those who love garish colors on plastic toys by selling a 'system' camera to them... Which while it would be good for Nikon low/medium end sales (fit in under the D3100 perhaps?), it certainly would not be a 'pro' camera.

Low light performance will be weak, but it might hang with DX cameras up to 1600, and if it has a good EVF and very quiet autofocus motors on the lenses, it might be a lot of fun as a high end consumer camera that competes with the D3100 and 5100 because it can flow seamlessly between stills and video.

I can't see how they could make it a tool for professionals with a 2.5 crop factor unless the lenses were absolutely amazing or unless it's as the light weight travel camera that a pro might take instead of packing that D3 off to dinner.

So happy no carrying my D3 around like a retard for dinner pictures, loved seeing those waiters take pictures of me and my wife with a D3+SB900.

Yes Nikon is developing a new "pro" mirrorless compact camera with a new lens mount and lenses. It was expected to be announced in late March or early April but due to the tragedy in Japan it is now unknown when it will be announced much less become available.

Do a search for Nikon EVIL or mirrorless camera.

I have been looking at the P 7000 and a couple of other p&s cameras. Someone on another forum said that Nikon was coming out with a new 2.5x crop camera soon. Is this true or was he just pulling every ones leg? If it's true I guess they will be expensive like the X100 camera. Is the P 7000 good enough to buy now or is it better to wait and see?
