Keynote, Appele's flavor of Powerpoint, has excellent slide-making capabilities and you can export to several different filetypes, i.e. Quicktime, HTML, PDF, etc.

When you use lightroom 3 for a slideshow you can only watch it in lightroom correct? So if you finalize it and try to send a copy to somone who does not have lightroom then they cants watch it. Is this right?

No, LR has an mp4 export option, so the slide show can be rendered and seen by someone without lightroom.

If price was a concern, I'd use iPhoto (should come with your mac). iMovie will give you more control over each image, but the whole process will take longer. Lightroom and aperture should give you more control over your video (particularly with resolution and compression settings), but will cost you more, as would video editting software like Final Cut (which is probably too cumbersome to use). There are also dedicated applications like ProShow which are designed to do this.
