Yep just did it yesterday....ARRRRHHH. Well I admit I normally shoot at ISO 200 for most stuff but yesterday I was at the aquarium and of course low light, all a flash does is reflect off the glass. Then they had a butterfly exhibit outside, needless to say oops I forgot to change the settings and I have a few uh "interesting" butterflies.

And after this thread too!!!

There are some cameras where it is so easy to do...

Back on topic :-) I have also forgot to set the ISO from the night before a couple of times.. so I have AUTO ISO on by default nowadays .. well not really I now have a D7000 ( big grin !) and I have been looking through the menus and found this little gem! I now have my D7000 set to simple ISO & Display so the ISO is displayed in the Finder and on the LCD and also the back monitor. I can also change it by simply turning the dial! Auto ISO be Gone !!!

As far I remember, I also got kit by forgetting changes in exposure compensation on my Flash...(SB800)

I use a lot a CP filter for outdoor photography... Also something you need to remember to change/remove when you do indoor photography..

That is actually a great idea and I would actually find that far more handy then the preset scene modes.

I find exposure compensation gets me more than ISO, although I've messed up ISO a few times too. I'm also finding I have to relearn good 'resetting' habits for when I carry two bodies - I get confused about where I left what set to whatever.

I think it is a lot easier to do this when you are just out and about and not doing a real setting shoot. Meaning like for me I take my camera when I am out for work, but since I am not set on a certain subject or shooting condition I don't usually preset the settings. However if you are obviously setting up for a portrait shoot or something you would have different steps to go through getting everything setup for that type of shooting which would probably catch these type of things. Know what I mean?

Not yet, because using high ISO is something I don't easily do so I usually reset it after the shots - but I'm sure it is only a matter of time.

Think I said this a few weeks ago, but part of my work time is spent shooting pictures for my employer (I am a staffer at a university), that mostly go online and into university communications documents (magazines etc). Anyway... We are always on the look out for something other than the classic boring group of 3 people smiling at the camera or formal head-shots of senior people - we have thousands of those.

The university president was doing an open Q&A session that was indoors that I took a bunch of shots at. To avoid being too intrusive and disruption, I prefer not to use a flash at these kind of events, hence the higher ISO. The next day, on my way home from doing something else entirely I found that Hearse in question and made the boo-boo.

:)

@Bram: Also bracketing settings. My D70 was remembering where you have stopped... then when you have an unfinished bracketing session, the next time you use your camera you may get under/over exposed..

On my D7K you can also get caught by the remote control settings. (first click to rise the mirror instead of fire it)

Think this happened to me once or twice, with other settings as well. Even this one time I shot an event that didn't really need much editing or high-quality photos to begin with, so I switched from RAW to JPG. Then next assignment I was on, didn't remember to change it back. That was kind of a bummer.

On a more constructive level, I think the way to avoid this is having a list of settings to check before each shoot. Suggestions:

- White balance (if you're not shooting RAW)
- Metering (spot, matrix..)
- ISO (duh)
- JPG or RAW (and quality)
- Aperture and shutter speed (in case perhaps you used some extreme settings)
- Any other suggestions...?

The previous night I was shooting a venue at ISO 1600 with my D200. The next day I was shooting engagement pictures outdoors still at 1600. OOPS, Used Neet Image to clean up the noise issue. They must have been happy as they hired me to shoot their wedding also. Now I always return my camera settings to a standard point when done shooting. That was very embarassing for me. Though this happened over five years ago, I remember it like it just happened.

I remember doing this on film cameras, F3.

shooting 400, inside a church, remember every 38/39 shots you changed the roll and I picked up a 100 iso that I had in the bag, I would usually carry the different film in different pockets so I would not make that mistake.

they were not carried in their boxes, but in the plastic canister, as it took too much time to open the boxes of Kodak, well did not make that mistake after that, all 400s had a rubber band wrapped tightly around the canister so you could tell what was in there without opening.

Whew!!!!

I usually don't mess with my ISO, but I have left settings messed up many of times. We were at 4th of July fireworks and about half way through I thought I would take a look at the pics...realized they were all in B&W. I find it being a problem when I go from lens to lens, because I was different settings on them...especially with the new 105 macro lens.

I guess we all got caught by the ISO trap once or more.

On my D70 it was a big mistake to use an ISO above 800.

From another hand, if you print the noise photo, you will see that the result is not so bad as in the display.

Shot a family group at one of my first weddings at too wide an aperture ONCE! I had the group stand in a horse shoe shape and forgot to change it from the f2.8 I had used inside the chapel. Got home and looked at the picture on my PC, the bride and groom looked nice, couldn't make out the people standing at the edges though! :-) Ever since then I ALWAYS reset all my cameras to MY default settings after every shoot, and re-check them before the next shoot. I also shot a video ONCE with an external mic attached to the hot shoe. Got a realy nice looking piece of footage, and then noticed I hadn't turned the mic power on!!! No sound what so ever, as the external mic disables the internal one. I have a Red elastic band tied round it now to serve as a visual reminder to TURN IT ON! We all do it bjrichus.
