Knock on wood my D40 has been out in light snow and rain before but I always made sure that water didn't pool too much around the mode dial.

Water always pool there because the viewfinder catches water.

I had the same problem with my Nikkon D5100 just a month old.

My dial started skipping some modes. I thought I had to get it to a service center but there is a very easy fix for this. No need to go to repair center. Just slightly press down the dial while turning do a full turn around and there you go the problem is fixed. Nothing major, seems like some of the contacts underneath get dusty and need a little scratch to start again. Very easy fix and won't void warranty at all.

First try to reset the camera to factory defaults. The manual has instructions on how to do this (see nikonusa.com for the full thing, as the printed 'quickstart' guide included in the box is not the full manual), as this will clear any software/firmware "hang".

If that does not work, send the camera body back to Nikon (or the dealer or whoever you got it from depending on where in the world you are) for service. It's so new, that it should be worked on under warranty. The dial may have been knocked or bumped and the contacts may have been moved out of registration, so the thing won't work properly...

By the way, you haven't dropped it or got it wet or tried to use it with a layer of heavy condensation on it have you? ;-)

i've had my camera for about a month now, everything seemed fine until a couple of days ago. I can't choose Manual Mode, Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority, and some other auto modes, even if the dial is in that position, the camera doesn't change to the respective modes!
