Our irrational attachment to Nikon boxes tells you something: how much emotion we feel for Nikon camera's and lenses. I always tell my wife (who worries about getting old and physically unattractive) that as long as she gives me good feelings I will feel good about her no matter how she looks.

I have stacks of them taking up space all over the house. Just cannot bear to through them out. Somehow I value them so much simply because I love the contents that used to be in the box! Doesn't really make sense, just an emotional reaction.

Me too! It's totally irrational, since I'm not planning on selling any of the items that came in those boxes. Some of the used lenses I've purchased on Ebay came with their original boxes. Some, possibly 10 to 20 years old, and they were still in mint condition. To think someone saved that bit of Nikon history for so long . . . I just can't bear to throw them out.

Hooray! I've "solved" the Nikon box dilemma! I put them all in plastic shopping bags and threw them into our previously asbestos-filled attic! Although it's very small, and really only serves as a crawlspace for the heating ducts, I've shoved some other equipment's boxes, and a full-sized, shoulder-mount ENG camera case in there as well--boy, was THAT ever always in the way (we performed an asbestos abatement a few months ago, but still no one wants to go up there).

So I was looking through my drawer for some old cookin gel filters and noticed I still have the boxes for some filters that fit lenses I sold over 10 years ago. I think I will recycle the boxes, but I'm keepin the filters.

I only keep my first two boxes from 1989: Nikon 8008 and Nikon 50 1.8

Now I have 3 film cameras, 2 digital cameras, 14 lenses plus teleconvertes, 3 flashes...

I trow the box away as soon as I check the camera or lens is working ok.

I haven't sell a camera or lens. Once bougth used lens, but without original box.

Step Three: Make her open the box... and that's the way you do it!

I'm going to need a bigger box :^)

So you guys keep the boxes just to resell your gear later? Makes sense since most of you "upgrade" every six months! ;^D

Mine get thrown away, well recycled. I dont have a plan on selling my equipment in the near future and the money the boxes bring in are not worth the storage space. I do have my 105 box, it holds odd and ends.

Hey super shooter your right that SNL skit was awsome! My best friend got married in 2007 and for his stag he had to walk around the Whistler BC area bar and club hopping wearing nothing but a t-shirt and an actual hand made dick in the box around his waist! haha it was halarious! We got some great shots from that night :)

I have all my boxes inside another larger box. Not sure if I can get another thing because there is no room left in the larger box....unless I get a larger larger box then I'm all set.

I think your box issue might be solved if you bought a 600mm F/4.

They are useful if you sell or trade in your gear. I get a bit more for my gear on trade or selling at my local shops here in Korea. It makes it easier for the store to re-sell the product or re-ship it somewhere. I try to keep everything that goes for Nikon, Leica and Zeiss boxes. Once the D700 replacement comes out I will most likely be trading in a few things plus cash depending on how bad the price is :(

Keep them in a larger box labeled "Careful, Gold Inside." I should put a cinder block in there.

I sell/buy stuff quite often and the box always gets me another $20-$50. Not sure why - never bothered asking while walking to the bank.

Yep, I keep my boxes as well. It's a good thing, because I ended up selling my old Sigma 18-200 and Nikon 50 1.4G recently. Made it much easier to pack. I don't know about most people, but if I was buying something used, if it comes with the box it makes it look like the owner cared more about the item.

I definately qualify as a "box hoarder". My loft is full of them. I keep them for several reasons.
1) I often don't use all the accessories that come in the box (batteries/chargers, leads, cases etc) so I keep them in the box with the instructions and receipt.
2) In case I need to send something back for repair or refund.
3) To box up if I ever come to sell.
4) So people don't see what i've just bought when driving past my house, and seeing the boxes put out for the bin man. I don't want to get burgled by some one who saw the empty boxes. (there is a problem with this of course.......when I finally do get round to clearing them out, my neighbours will think I've won the lottery!

I do save space where possible by puting small boxes inside big ones. I have all my Nikon boxes, they're just too nice to throw away, and they remind me of the excitement I felt when I first bought them home. :-)

My gosh, what pack rats we are !! I've only ever sold one piece of camera equipment in the past 47 years, and I didn't have a box for it. However, I have pretty much every box and the contents for everything purchased since then - which I have wagged from Maryland, to Georgia, to four different residences in Louisiana. I have no intent to sell anything, but I just can't get myself to trash the boxes. BTW, anyone need a box for a Panagor 125mm lens from 1972?

I keep my boxes tucked under the office desk to help my wife lose track of how much Nikon stuff I'm actually accumulating. I've always been a box keeper for some reason - original xbox, wii, aftermarket car stereo, point-n-shoots, etc. It might be superficial but I think there is a psychological factor with some people when buying a preowned Nikon product (for example) and reading in the ad that it comes in the original box.

I have them stacked under my desk. My wife complains about them all the time...I should probably throw them in the attic if I want to keep them. I have sold a couple of Nikon things and I don't think it matters that much really. Some people might feel better buying something that has the box because at least it doesn't look like you just stole it from someones camera bag or something. Some might not care if they get a decent price.
