But if he gets the 105, then he's got macro covered (at least a beginning), too.

for concerts : nikon 85 or 105 in the aperture that you can afford, they will allow you to shoot without flash, I would suggest the 85 1.4, or the 1.8 if that is too expensive, get the af-s, 105 will give you some more reach.

for parties, you already have a 50mm 1.8, so add the 35mm to that and you are covered. small, light, fast normal lens, get the af-s

as suggested by drobs

travelling : 12 - 24 you already have for landscapes, 35mm, 50mm and 85 mm will cover the rest, should you require another lens will depend on you interest.

add the 70-200, big and heavy, but thats the price you pay for a fast lens and a tc1.4 or 1.7, if that is too expensive, then look at the 70-300 vr and you should be happy for a long time, unless you develop an interest in marco photography, but thats another topic.

If you're interested in the 24-70, have a look at the new 24-120 f/4 VR, too, teeboy (not the old variable aperture version). Like the sigma lens hearty mentions, it's got VR (24-70 doesn't) and it adds a lot on the long end. It's tack sharp throughout its range according reviews. It's what I'm saving for right now.

the 35-70 on dx covers the equivalent FOV of 52-105 which is a great range for portrait and medium telephoto shots like theater and stage. the 24-70 adds the 24-35 range(eqv to 35-50) which is great for environmental portraits and even landscape and events, street photography and reportage. Thus the 24-70 is a much more general lens and therefore more "normal". having said that the 17-70 F2.8-F4 from sigma provides an even more general lens and adds OS/VR to the mix! ( without the light leak issues! :-) )

@heartyfisher: how come will it be a less specialized DX lens?

I have the older version - the nikkor 35-70 and it works as my portrait lens on DX (and also for theater shoots). the 24-70 will allow you to have a less specialized DX lens. Though a bit longer than what is generally accepted for a "normal" zoom it could be and has been used quite successfully as one by many DX shooters.

no budget in particular. Not in a hurry to purchase. i'm just gonna save up money for that lens if ever.

Right now i'm reading an article at the nikon 24-70mm 2.8g lens. Is this ok even if i'm using a DX body?

You didn't post anything about budgetary concers so it's difficult to recommend but I think heartyfisher is putting you in the right direction. Next up would be a 70-200 VR2 but that's a huge purchase.

If you think you can get away with another primse, a 85 1.4 would be ideal; but again - expensive..

price? consider the sigma 17-50F2.8 or the older nikkor 28-70 F2.8 or 28-75 Tamron .. also look onto the 17-70 F2.8-F4 OS from sigma. good luck

Hi guys,

I just bought a Nikon D7000. This is my first DSLR btw. I currently have a Nikkor 12-24mm 4g and 50mm 1.8d as my lens. I'm looking at either a good low light normal or wide zoom lens that's greater than 24mm or another prime lens as i'm going to use it for concerts, parties, travelling, indoors.(taking pictures and video recording)

Hope you guys can suggest one. thanks.
