Okay so I did some reading on Flickr. Stupid I never really bothered to check this before. The default licence for images uploaded is All rights reserved, meaning the image may not be used in any way without permission from the photographer, as I understand it.
I do make it a practice to only upload small-resolution images, but I don't think I'd want to put in a watermark. It draws attention and changes the image in a way that I think is not worth lowering the risk of the image being used by others only slightly.

On a different note, what would be the stept one could take if someone else used one of your images? The case of the guy in the video is incredibly severe of course, there's no way he's going to keep this under control any more. However, do any of you have any stories or experiences where someone used your image without permission, and how did you deal with it?

I have this rather funny story that is somewhat related: me and some friends have a website where we occasionally put up general interest articles. Then some day one of us stumbles upon another website that literally copy-pasted the article and did not mention us as the authors of it. He also didn't ask for permission before copying it. Since the website was based in our own country we sent the owner a serious letter forcing him to take the article off his website, otherwise we'd contact a lawyer. In the meantime however, we discovered he'd not copied the images in the article to his own server, but instead he was still linking to the images on our server. So we changed the files that were located in the folder he was linking to, to..ehm...well..different images. It looked rather funny :)

the basic rule of thumb is the only way to be sure no one steals your picture from any website is to not have it on any website. if it's out there it can be taken and used with or without your consent. there are many posts with stories on this site with these types of stories. some suggestions to help is to keep the picture small and use a watermark, but it will only deter the unauthorized use and not stop it.

Good point, after seeing this video I'm stuck with this question myself. I don't want random people using my pictures without asking me for my permission or paying some money. I do take it my work on Flickr can't be used commercially without prior permission?

Hi All,

First time postin- been a lurkin for a while- owner of a few great nikon products that this site has helped me decide on. Thought this thread might fall within a question I have... What do you think of the different copy-write options that flickr has to offer? Would you recommend one over another. Especially if you own copy-write material or plan to sell in the future.... I'm not trying to bash one photo share site over another as i'm sure they all have issues- mainly the people who download the photo. I'm just more curious in personal experiences or opinions on flickr's various options.

It is not the first time I hear this name :)
He is a talented photographer..

On the Internet, for good and for bad, if you upload your work, you may find also that it could be used without your knowledge.

That is, it is good that you upload your work, showing your expresion...
but it can be also badly used without your knowledge.

Very interesting story. Reminds me a bit about the famous picture of Che Guevara by Alberto Korda. Same thing: image has been used all over the world on t-shirts etc but the photographer did not get any money for it.

Just wanted to see what you guys thought of this story. Noam Galai uploaded a photo of himself on Flick that without his knowing got stolen and used all over the world. In the course of 2 years, his image became a symbol for revolution and angst appearing in magazines, billboards, graffiti, books, tshirts, and other media outlets. This video def brings up some interesting questions concerning photographers' rights and what if anything you can do once your image goes viral and used without your permission. I'd love to hear your thoughts on The Stolen Scream

Hey Patrick,

A little unrelated but I just wanted to drop you a line and tell you that you & Lee have done a really nice job with the fstoppers website.. I found it about a month or so ago and it's definitely one of the daily stops I make... great great stuff and keep up the good work..

In regards to the Flickr image being stolen and used by revolutionaries... hmmm... The types of people doing the thieving are really the kinds of renegades we both love and hate in our society so to me it doesn't really come as much of a surprise.

It's kind of like people who download music via bitorents and such.. they believe what they're doing is ok and that it's unfair for the giant record companies to charge for music; after all it's art and something people enjoy and should have a right too right? Photography being ripped seems all too similar. So when you're on the "company" side of the equation, it doesn't feel so right anymore. Maybe it's a lesson us photographers and members of society need to learn..

Jon
