"Do a forum search. This was discussed extensively when the D7000 was announced."

Of course I searched. Indeed it was discussed extensively, but I didn't see anything decisive either way.

That's no reason to start yet another thread on the exact same topic! Regardless of how you reword the question, you are NEVER going to get a decisive answer until Nikon makes their FUTURE announcements. And even then you still might not have a clear answer as to which model replaces which.

"Also why the concern if it is "the official D90 replacement"?"

Good question - it's just a price thing really, though I am guessing the D90's intro price was close to the D7000s (I can't find info on it).

Thanks for the responses.

From what you mentioned, the D7000 is the only logical choice period. Do you already have lenses for the D60? If so just get the body only and call it a day. The D7000 is the newest camera in Nikon's DSLR line up. Also why the concern if it is "the official D90 replacement"? Bottom line is it has the newest tech ( comparable to even the flagship models ) and the next releases will likely be the D300s and D700 replacements, both of which will definitely be out of you budget range.

The D7000 is the D90's replacement.

I think they are just saying it isn't so that they can get more D90 stock out before discontinuing it.

I went from a D60 to D90 and loved it. It's a big step up.

But I am quite happy from going from my D90 to the D7000.

To me the D7000 takes everything I wanted from the D300S and puts it at a more affordable price.

So if I were you I'd save up a bit more and just get the D7000 if you can find it.

To me it doesn't give me the urge to upgrade and I certainly have no valid reason to upgrade to the FX so the D7000 is all the camera I need, now it's all about glass.

That seems to make sense, at least model number wise. But the D5000 and the D90 were very different cameras in terms of features - top mount LCD, command dial on the front, etc.

Good question. Most people saw the D7000 to be the d90s replacement but it seems that the D90 is on a class of it's own. At the moment is in between

I think that the D90 will be replaced by the D5000 replacement that's suppose to come the next few months. So the D3000 then the D3100 then 5100 and then the D7000.

I'm currently a D60 owner looking to upgrade to something around the D90-D7000 range. I've been reading the news here, and it's not clear to me if the D7000 is officially the replacement for the D90 or if we will see a separate D90 replacement in the coming months. Is there any official word on this?

The D7000 looks great, but it's just a bit much ($) for me and the D90 looks great, but I'm weary of upgrading right as something is perhaps about to be replaced. Any ideas?
