I love my sigma 20mm f/1.8 on DX... Once I jump to FX I will need to get my hands on some 28mm prime... too bad the Nikon 28 1.4 af-d costs too much.. I know I won't survive with 2.8 so I'd probably go with the sigma 28 1.8.. it's macro too...

that sigma 20 1.8 is almost macro btw.

too shallow DOF on 50mm? doesn't make sense to me.

i love my 300 2.8, but would really like the 400 2.8, 200 2 and 35 1.4.

couldn't say which is best without owning them all, though i would find it hard to say one is BETTER than the 300 2.8, as it is useful so often.

nikonian said:
hi guys , just curious..

For some reason, 24mm on full frame ALWAYS makes me smile.

I do not like 50mm glass because of the too shallow DOF and (mostly) boring FOV.

85mm is always very nice whether on crop or full-frame. The same goses for 135mm/200mm

One of my all-time favorites is Canon 400mm/5.6 L USM (fast focusing, terrific image quality, lightweight and just perfect for birds in flight)

Then we get to the long glass, which gives me hiccups for being outrageously expensive and heavy enough to justify buying a man-slave to carry it around. But me love the long glass long time. ;)

thats good mb THAT you can see the pics because i cant.

yeah, this little lens has pretty much everything. nano coating, SIC, bla bla bla. it looks nice on the paper imho. nicer than 105VR and cheaper and newer (2008 compared to 2006 for 105vr).

your advice was great and i dont have any remorse going with 60 instead of 105 so far. even though it doesnt have VR.

@nikonian - "can you guys see the pics??" we can now, very sharp indeed! By the way this little 60 has nano coating too. And listen to the Panamon_Creel, he is 100% right.

>>For macro you need at least F16 some times F32 or higher<<

Only if you don't mind loss of sharpness due to diffraction.
f/11 on DX and f/16 on FX are pretty much the max for obtaining optimum IQ for Macros.
You can always try some focus stacking if you have static subjects to increase DOF.
Tripod ---> certainly
Focusing rail ---> highly recommended
Tripod, Gearhead & Focusing rail ---> now that's a macro set-up ;)

For macro you need at least F16 some times F32 or higher. You will need Flash for most outdoor stuff. Many people take the outdoor indoors(to remove movement due to wind) and use a tripod.

and yes the 60mm micro is one of the sharpest lenses ever. in the top 10 for sure.

adamz, i suspect that's because 24-70 has nano coating? to improve contrast or sharpness. this is just my guess.

@mb: yeah, tripod is absolutely required but at this point, i am just going to have fun with my new lens and later, i will get tripod definitely.

can you guys see the pics??

nikonian - I don't know about Your lens but as for the sharpness between 50/1.4 and 24-70/2.8, the second one is sharper - I used to have both of them and decided to sell the 50/1.4 as it wasn't even half as good as 24-70/2.8 (in areas of IQ and AF speed)

When you are so close to your subject depth of field is so small that even slightest movement will put your subject out of focus. Tripod is a must and you could try and learn how to focus manually.

okay guys, just wanna give u all , an updated news about how this lens perform and what i think so far about this baby.

for general photography, I LOVE THIS LENS SO MUCH. this is a seriously SHARP lens. i am wondering now, which one is sharper between this lens and prime lens like (50 1.4) or pro zoom like 24-70 2.8.

this lens is sharp even wide open at 2.8 aperture and i just love it. i am impressed. I will give you picture as well. Please comment!

for micro photography though , i think i still need to learn about it. i cant get everything in focus and sometimes, its all about light. i havent done too much micro photography with this lens. but i ve taken a picture of small thing indoor and the pic didnt come out well. but i think this is something wrong with me.
i might not have enough light at that time. i didnt even use tripod either.

anyway,here are some of the pics and please let me know if this is sharp enough for y'all.

i finally bought 60 afs today. damn, it cost me 580 bucks.

we'll see how good this lens really is. i followed mb's advice and i ve seen people take insect pictures in in the internet with this lens so its possible. its just harder i guess.

but if this was hard, i doubt 105 will make it much easier, maybe should go all the way to 150-200mm and skip 105.

i plan to shoot flowers this week and see how sharp is this baby and how good is the bokeh.

oh boy, i am gonna have something to play with finally this weekend.

btw , this is my first lens after kit lens and i am so excited.

the uild quality is much better imho and heavier than my kit lens. and i like the M/A mode.
