so all is good?

Thank you for that comment. It made me think and realize that i was attaching the lens the wrong way. Normally i would press down on the release button. I diddnt and herd the click and AF worked instantly. Took the lens off and thought hmmmmmm. Attach it again and press the release button, result = no AF. I then rush to check the manual on mounting instructions and it says and i quote " be careful not to accidently press the release button"

I was purposely pressing the release button when attaching a lens! DOH! (Smacks forehead)

It's one of those simplest things that you think " i know how to do that i don't need to read this part of the instructions".

I just hope there is no damage done by pressing it, can it? you press it anyway to release the lens right.

Hey iChilliPepper,

When I look at my PC screen I can see a reply by me which gives an easy way to know more about your problem but you haven't mentioned it at all. Can you see it?

Sorry i didn't mean to leave you out. I actually don't have any other lenses or know anyone else who owns an slr. :(. I'm getting ready to go to the shop right now.

TaoTeJared said:
I have had an error like that when my aperture lock disengages. Pull the battery for 30-40 minutes (after all the electricity disperses away), clean contacts and that is all you can do. That may fix it.
If that doesn't work you may have to send it in. I had this happen to an old D80 and had to send it in to have something done. Nikon wouldn't say much except that it had to be taken apart and have the electricity discharged manually. When asked they told me the buffer reference is for when it is working correctly and is a generic code when it is stuck. Manuals don't always help fix items.

Yeah, i looked in the manual, but didn't find any info on the matter at the time.

The AF failed again yesterday night and hasn't come back, unlike last time. I have a feeling that something has happened in the af motor in the body. I was shooting an event so used af quite a lot and noticed a slight change as the week progressed.

I do have one one suspicion that my 50mm 1.8 never actually clicks in once its mounted properly. Do all lenses click? Its fully locked in though, i cant screw it any tighter and im definitely mounting it the right way.

Check and clean the lens to camera contacts. Unmount and remount you lens if it happens again. R09 is, as Jonny pointed out, the number of shots remaining in the camera buffer. Read your manual!

I don't know what the focus problem is down to, but the r09 message is completely normal. A half-press of the shutter button not only activates focus but also displays shots remaining in the buffer (in your case, 9 remaining). If you hold down the shutter button on a continuous shooting mode you'll see that number tick down as the buffer fills.

One thing that often happened to me with the D90 is my left hand would accidentally flip the focus mode switch to manual. That's not the problem, is it?

Thank you for that, i read online elsewhere giving mixed views on it being autofocus problems/memory card buffer. I tested your theory just seconds ago and yes you were right. So thank you for that. Does not explain, why the af died for an hour though.

LOL no. not for me, but as a beginner the one accident I had was turning the mode dial while shooting an event, then looking through the viewfinder and panicking because i lost all the info in the display. But then i took out the battery, reset. Looked around and saw that the dial moved :D

Ok so, brand new camera (d90) and brand new lens (50 1.8 af d) (body used for a bout 2 weeks, lens 4 weeks)

I keep on seeing r09 on my camera lcd screen while trying to focus.

The night before the camera failed to focus completely. Focus wouldn't even move. I checked the af switch, took the battery out, reset all my settings and nada :(

Then after an hour of being pissed off, it works but still shows r09 when focusing in the lcd.

I noticed it has had trouble focusing on occasions before.

Any help will be much appreciated :'(
