Sorry to hear about your loss. I would get a D700 and the exact same lenses. There is little point in waiting ... waiting ... waiting. I was successful in buying a new TC20EIII 10 months after it was announced. It is highly unlikely that a D700 replacement will be available "immediately" after it is announced. The dealers (even if forewarned) will still have to unload their stock. I noticed that some UK resellers are selling Nikon cameras at 25% less than they were selling them around Christmas time. This is probably a sign of there being replacements on the horizon. The D3S and D700 were the most heavily discounted. The D3X was 10% less. I really have not looked at the others cameras because I am not interested in the lower priced models. I use the D700 and D300s. My plan is to upgrade and not downgrade. Maybe the D7000 will be a good D300 replacement. I want to try one out before buying it. Good luck. I hope everything sorts itself out.

If my D700 was stolen, I would buy another one right away and not wait for a replacement that might still be a year away before you could get your hand on it. Summer is coming and you may not want to miss that. Maybe it is time to try a D3s or D3x?

When the replacement comes and if it offers significant improvement, you could sell your new D700 and upgrade.

I would never go back to film but that's me.

Yeah, I agree with the others here, if you can wait, wait. Obviously if the insurance company wants you to replace what you had, then go do it, but it's highly anticipated that the upper levels of Nikon's cameras will be replaced this year. Even if they don't, the D700 will still drop in price (bodies always get cheaper). If you need a camera to shoot with, borrow or buy a cheap used camera- it won't be as good as your D700, but will still take good pictures if you know how to work around the limitations.

If you like the lenses that you had, I'd suggest replacing those, as they will work just as well on your new camera as on your old.

Sorry to hear what happened. Here a few people are saying it might be an opportunity to try film. Which i don't think is a bad idea. If you wouldn't mind doing it that is.

It'll give a new dimension if you've never tried it. I studied b&w at college in a photography course I didn't care much about at the time. Sometimes hated it. Few years later fell in love with photography (ironic). And at some point I want to go back and pick up from where i got bored. Buying an old school hasse in the process.

In answer to your q, no doubt the dwhatever is going to be a lot better, but there a personal need for the upgraded body? do you feel the need/want to move up. D700 is still a great camera.

Hi,

Ouch. Sorry.

Been there, done that, twice. Three times actually. If your insurance is good, great! If it's not so good, well...

You'll get something, what you decide to do depends upon your needs. If you like FX, you can replace D700 or wait for a few months or do DX.

I had replacement insurance, so I managed to upgrade twice - oddly enough it was something of an enhancement - although I hated it.

I would see how your settlement goes.

My best,

Mike

Sorry to hear about your loss
As you will have found out by now, the D700 is a truly exceptional camera and the 16-35mm f4 ED VR a great lens
I am going to guess, you are missing them already
I suspect we may have to wait until the autumn for a D800, even then, we do not know the price. The big difference with the D800 is likely to be video, if you don't need video, I would wait a couple week till after Focus on Imaging ( big trade show in the UK).If it does not come out then, I would get another D700

It might be a good creative experience to pick up a Nice Digi cam (g12,Lx5,Oly's new one) to play with and wait for the new release.

I often grab an old film camera and BW film with one lens and just shoot a roll just to remind myself to slow down and take the time to actually capture an image. Film can be damn expensive anymore though.

I'm at a loss for what people buy for insurance. I guess I don't count pennies with buying insurance. My renters covers everything 100% full replacement, check cut and no hassle as long as a police report is filed. $250 deductible all for about $15/month.

I went through this with less expensive gear a couple of years ago, mdavern (D300 and 35 1.8). The renters' insurance paid me then-current cost less deductible ($1950 - $500 = $1450) and I bought a D90.

I don't know what to tell you about waiting. As you've seen if you've read the posts here, everyone keeps thinking the D700 replacement is coming out in a few months. Let's hope for everyone's sake it's not like the gap between the canon 5D and 5DII.

Welcome to the forum. Hopefully your future is a happier one than your recent past...

Edit: I just checked and I guess if it comes out after July, it will be like the 5D-5DII time gap.

The camera and lens are covered by my home insurance, less deductable. Not sure how the process will work. You are right, Gareth, I might have to buy the exact same kit. No shame in that since it will be hard to wait anyway. I see many of you have been waiting years. Who knows when the D700 will be replaced, how it will be priced, etc. They also got my cheapie 28-80mm f3.3-5.6 which I really liked as a carry anywhere lens. The expensive one was the 16-35mm f4 ED VR. Ouch. Paid $1,100 for that one not to long ago. With card, filters and a few other items, easily $5,000 replacement value. Much more at cost. Awaiting insurance decision and trolling Ebay for prices.

what sort of insurance do you have? do you have replacement insurance? if you do they will replace your d700 with another on, but they usually wont pay out unless you buy exactly what you had if it is stll available.

you may also have a limited time in which to make the claim.

atm the ball is all in the insurers court and i'm pretty sure you will have little say.

Yes that is really bad timing because although new bodies are coming this year it still will be just long enough to be considered annoying to wait. Tough call maybe buy cheapy like a D90 which is priced well right now...

Way to go regarding the insurance by the way. Most people do not insure their gear unless of course it is your job. Very sorry to hear this happened to you, I hope they catch the guy who did this.

D700 was stolen (along with two lenses). <sigh> Not a professional. Just enjoy taking pictures with a full frame camera. Will be getting some insurance money. Probably 2,300-2,800 for the camera only. (Just a guess.) Saw that members have been waiting for the imminent announcement of the now fabled D700 replacement since 2009. Could pony up for the assumed $1,500 additonal for the new D800 or whatever body, but it would hurt. Also willing to buy back a good used D700 and save the cash. (The lens is more important than the camera and the photographer is more important than both--right.) If I wait for the new camera, would be reduced to a Lumiux point-and-shoot or an occasional loaner of a D80 from my daughter. So....what would you do????
