My dad has a Nikkormat for as long as I remember. However, I started with the Practica, Pentax Spotmatic and olympus pen then got the wonderful olympus OM-10. Anyway all my camera gear got nicked I didnt have insurance and being a poor student I didnt shoot for almost 10 years. During that time my mom got the Nikon EM amd my brother took up photography professionally and he went with nikon FM/FE FG Bronica mamiya etc. When I finally got back into photography it made sense to go with nikon with all that nikon gear in the family! Not that we ever swapped gear as we live in different countries ! heh!

I chose Nikon because it meant free lens borrowing/lending with family members that also use Nikons, but I love CLS and I really think the user interface is great on even entry-level Nikon SLRs. I think I've found my camera for life in the D7000 (like Thom Hogan's recent post, though his choice was the D700). Of course, I could be persuaded to make the D7000 my backup camera for life in a couple of years...

Actually Nikon is a Zeiss Ikon wannabe. That's why they named the company after their Nikon camera because it sounded cool and prestigious like Zeiss Ikon. Imagine if they would have gone with their original choice of naming the company Nikkorette or Bentax!

I have always felt that Canon is a 'Nikon wanabee'. Maybe if Nikon had been quicker off the mark in the early days, Canon would have a similar DSLR market share to Sony or Pentax.

Nah, there is only one. Nikon.

That is firmly my opinion until they sell me something bad or give me bad service... 8^}

simply, CLS & commander mode and the fact that a lot of people say nikon is better at iso's. Reading up for a long time, few popular photographers say nikon listens to their customers, contrary to canon. Also asks their opinion is a big factor for me, sort of Apple Mac'ish, and thats how i roll, shows better standing of who i want to invest my money in for the future. Like gambling. Oh and that they give lens hoods and bags. Simple but every little helps.

I have a D90 with 24-70, 50 1.4g, and sb-900. Before both of my lens and my flash I had a kit lens which wasn't too bad. I started looking at Nikon lens and their product and noticed that all their product cost much more than Canon. Like my 24-70 cost 500 more than the Canon one. For that reason I thought about switching over to Canon.

After giving it a long thought I decided to stay with Nikon because I noticed that their lens are superior then Canons'. Right after that I sold my kit lens and bought the 24-70, 50 1.4g and sb-900 and never regret it. Now, I'm waiting for the D700 replacement. I really, really want to just go and buy the D700 already but I would really regret it if the replacement comes out not too long after.

Ooh! A DSX1000! Nice solid camera!

It's kind of solid, but not really. It's certainly not FM2 solid. My uncle's basement is very humid, the original leather case rotted to hell (but I still like the Mamiya logo on it!) and the self timer button crumbled. The film advance lever is a bit chintzy- but everything works. The shutter speed dial doesn't have that same "klunk" when you turn it, like the FM2. But it's a great camera, has a nice lens. The mount is plastic too, if I remember right. I think I have a 55mm 1.4 on it.

Totally agree. You heard of the psychology test where they put 24 people in a room with no directive given to them, half with a blue suit and half with a red one. Within a couple of minutes, all form a tight group red with red and blue with bleu. An hour later, blue did not speak to red anymore. Then they switch the suit to half of the people and watched what happen. For a while some blue staid with their red friends but over time, the two distinctive groups formed again. The odd attempt to mix faded with time.

Changing your lenses from white to black has the side effect of changing the background color of your rumor forum (canonrumors vs nikonrumors).

Gareth writes:

>> i also get confused whether i am over or under exposing as the meters are reversed from canon (well actually the sx10is meter is vertical which is very easy to understand).

This seemed kind of odd to me too at first. But now it makes perfect sense... you'll notice that when you turn your lens' aperture ring, it moves the meter in the direction you're turning. Same with the command dials... in each case, the meter moves in the direction you turn the wheel. Same thing if you map your EV to the front wheel (a handy option, BTW)... After a while, it all feels natural.

But if you can't get used to it, check your manual... on my D7000 there's a menu option to reverse the meter, your D700 may have the same thing. And you can reverse the command dial direction too, so everything will match up.

My family has always been a Nikon family. My father bought a FM2, had 2 Nikon film point and shoots and eventually got a Nikon digital point and shoot, the E3700.

Then I got the D40, the 18-135, the 35mm 1.8 and the 105mm Micro.

I inherited a Canon Elan, however, because my cousin didn't want his film gear anymore. But otherwise, we're as Nikon as it gets. :D

Welcome dyckim; I have switched from Canon too. My first DSLR was a Canon 400D which was a really nice camera (my mother has it now). Then I decided I wanted a prosumer camera and bought a Canon 50D - biggest mistake I ever made (well, in photography at least). Sharpness, colors, contrast, really horrible!
After I saw pictures of a friend's D700 I took my Canon gear to a store, sold it all and came home with a D700+50G. A difference between night and day! Never regretted it for a second, the only lens I miss sometimes is the 200mm f2.8L which was an awesome lens.
Nothing against Canon, but their 50D was a horrible camera, nice thing about it though is that it made me switch to a D700 :)
