I have owned a D700 for a year and a half, and it still amazes me almost every day with its image quality. I guess I am looking forward to what new tech will bring to this body, and I am more than willing to pay the 3K that it will probably go for, on day 1. Why? Because I know it will not be replaced for another 3 years, and I will enjoy it the whole time instead of sitting on the fence wondering if it is worth the upgrade price.
By the time the D700 replacement is replaced, it will be 2014 or 2015 :)

I might even pony up for a D4 . . .

This pic was taken this past weekend during lunch at a local diner . . . D700 + 35mm f/1.4G (a d@mn sharp lens and currently on my camera 90% of the time). So yes I am one of those enjoying my camera now, while I wait for an upgrade.

That is the downside with digital photography: the (technical) image quality changes with the camera. Using film you could put the latest and most up to date film in any old camera and as long as the lens and exposure meter were good you could take advantage of this increased image quality. You only needed new camera hardware if you needed stuff like faster AF or more intelligent exposure calculation, but not for better image quality.

Now, if your photography is limited by your camera, because you need higher ISO, more resolution etc, you need to get a new camera. From the perspective of Nikon, Canon and all the others the switch (and the promotion) to digital was the best thing that could happen to them. They can sell a lot more hardware than ever before. But hey, it was our decision to go digital!

I just got myself a D700 a few months ago (and I'm really happy about it). But I'm still looking forward for the announcements of new DSLRs. Not because I want to get the latest model (the resolution and ISO performance of the D700 is more than enough for me and I do not need video at the moment), but to see, where the technology goes.

Concerning the race between Canon and Nikon I think it is a bad idea to depend the announcement of new cameras on the competition or trade shows. I prefer to get the information when the hardware is there. It is really frustrating if you need to wait 6 or more months for a new "toy" or tool.

Well DaveKona, my response to you:

I think cameras that are years old can produce as good an image as the ones you are hoping Nikon announces this week.
- I have a D700 and while it does produce amazing images, a D3S would produce better results, but I would like that IQ in a D700 form factor. Video would be nice too.

Why is everyone slathering at the mouth for camera models that have marginal tweaks to them? YOU ARE MAKING CAMERA MANUFACTURERS RICH WHILE ALL YOUR PROFITS GO TO THE NEWEST, MARGINALLY BETTER MODEL!
-Hey, its my money, if I want to spend it on a new camera, that is my perog.

Go out there and shoot your damn camera! You are buying in to this fkcing camera race that has been going on for eons! A newer model will not make you a better photographer (duh!!!).
- I guess you have a D70? Seriously newer cameras have benefits, read more about what gets updated and you will see. A D7000 will produce better results than a D200, even with the same sensor size. As tech gets updated, quality gets better.

I watch this obsession with what the damn C and N will release this week and I wonder how deep the hook has been set in your collective jaws. Shoot your camera and laugh at all the wannabees that need 128,000 iso or every 1.4 lens ever produced.....to set on their shelves and admire. Geez I wish I had an articulating lcd...........
- Obsession would be wanting an upgrade every year, but the D700 has been what, almost 3 years? And I own 4 f/1.4 lenses and none of them sit on my shelf, and I would love to shoot higher than 1600 ISO and get quality (but I don't want to pay for the D3S yet.

I think they are planning for a Xmas Panic Event with a major body release just after all sensible people have bought presents for themselves.

Hi,

It seems to me that neither Canon nor Nikon is working on each other's schedule. Sometimes I wonder if they are even competitors.

Nikon has trouble stocking some of their stores with their current stock, at least here in the USA.

As much as I'm on the fence about upgrading to FX, I doubt that a quick release will nudge me one way or the other.

I'm not even sure what technology is going to be 'decisive'. I mean, what is it that anyone wants 'more' in a next D700?

My best,

Mike

I agree. Last year was an off year for Nikon, it was a more of an update to the major pro bodies than something completely new- see the D3s and D300s.

The most major announcements were the D3100, D7000 and SB700 and the new primes, 24, 35 and 85 and the updates for VR for the 200-400 and the 70-200.

Wait, did I just type that? It was an off year for camera bodies, but it was an excellent year for lenses.

This year is more of a bodies year I suspect. D4, D700 replacement, D300 replacement and D5000 replacement.

I think Canon only released the 60D, the 7D and a couple speedlights or lenses. That's a bit sparse, so Canon may release something more significant this year.

Yes I agree a bid day of annoucements for Canon for sure. The Rebel line is a great camera it almost won camera of the year with popular photo magazine. Some good products released I think its still too early for any Nikon goodies yet. The big stuff is on the way though this summer and beyond.

The only Canon equipment in this release that interests me is the new 200-400mm with the built in extender that can be switched in as needed. Otherwise, I wouldn't touch the Canon stuff.

I have a D3S and a 200-400mm VR (along with tonnes of other Nikon gear), and don't feel threatened by the Canon 1D Mk. IV.

Very interesting move indeed... It looks to me (at least with the entry level cameras) that Canon is sort of "cheating" to get more sales. "Look, we have 18 MP and a flippy screen and all these cool gizmos and it's cheap!" Consumers like megapixels, so that's what Canon gives them. It seems that Nikon might care a bit more about making a good *different* product, rather than concentrating on what brings in the dough. I mean, how many people these days are going to know what ISO is when they buy their first DSLR? They'll see that Canon has more MP, so they'll go for that.

Not that I'm saying Canon sucks and Nikon is the better company, I just think they have different priorities.

I dunno, that's just the way I see it.

I can only answer for myself. I want even better image quality, higher max. ISO capability, faster AF, better camera IQ, more resolution. I think it is very likely we get some of these, at least we should for the price they´re going to ask for the thing.

According to what I've read online this morning, and this, copy and pasted from Engadget:

"The new Canon T3i, is 18 megapixel CMOS sensor, an ISO range of 100 to 6,400, support for SD / SDHC / SDXC cards, DIGIC 4 Imaging processor, pop-up flash, integrated Speedlite settings (to go along with a few new Speedlite flashes also introduced today) and a tilt / swivel LCD monitor. It'll ship at the start of March for $799.99 (body only), or $899.99 bundled with a EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II zoom lens."

I started to yawn and then realized that the *price* is rather good (compared to the D7000 that is), as for an 18MP camera less than $900 for the kit and $800 for the body alone, its quite cheap.

I'll be interested to see how it actually compares....

At least that is going to be the reason Joe Public buys it.

guys , this is a rumor, D7000 sent them in a tailspin, its better than the 60D, and very close to the 7D at a better price.

They are worried about the D700 replacment making their 5D obsolete, did not know what to do and started these rumors, so, don't get your knickers in a twist over a rumor.

They read this forum and decided too many people are switching over to Nikon, so "they" put out some rumors to cause trouble.

Their marketing is good, they got me to buy a PIXMA, yeah I know, that will get me a small ban, but confession is good for the soul.

besides, even if they do upgrade their "do not fit in the hands well" equipment, it means we will get better stuff.

stay cool, don't rush the brush, and see what Nikon will come up with.

they = marketing people

Oh Tao, I agree with you. Dont let my post fool you. Nikon has beat canon hands down.

I just am anxious for the D800. Though I don't necessarily need it at the moment, But I've just been to excited about it and owning a secondary Fx body. Also I've been excited to do some video on it (whatever modes it will have).

I just think nikon need to bring something to the table. I personally don't know how big this photo expo is but if I was a uneducated camera person seeking a brand, and notice canon coming out with these dslrs and lenses and all nikon offers at the moment were coolpixs, that would look like nikon got lazy. Just my opinion

New year, new slate
