I originally went with Nikon because I have several affiliations with the Sports Optics Division. I've been shooting now for about a year and a half, mostly birds. I've been doing my homework on equipment and I'm seeing some things that appear very consistently when comparing Nikon and Canon.

First, it appears that Canon made a dash for megapixels while Nikon worked on noise. While there had been times I wish my D90 had a bit more MP (all gone now that I own a D7000), I've compared some of my photos to people shooting Canon next to me and the images just don't stack up when ISO starts rising above 400, something not at all uncommon when photographing birds.

Second, Canon seems to have some real QC problems. I see rate of repair posts that seem to show Canon having a real issue here. And did the 5D II really have the mirror box falling out in some cameras? Man, and I see people whining about the D7000 having a few hot pixels when doing a long exposure of the inside of their lens caps!

Finally, it sounds like Canon doesn't really stack up compared to Nikon in the AF department. When photographing birds, this is pretty crucial.

On the flip side, Canon has done a much better job of supplying updated consumer priced lenses for nature and sports photographers. Nikon desperately needs updates to the 300mm f/4 and the 80-400 f4.5/4.6, both of which I own. And there seems to be a real demand for a 400mm f/5.6, though that one doesn't concern me because I'd rather have the 300mm f/4 and TC1.4 combo for more flexibility. I almost always have the TC on, but the times I didn't I was glad I could back off.

On a side note, i did something like that as well at Target (a US store) They tried to sell her the Canon t1i, with kit lens, for 750 dollars... when i said something the sales ASSoicate (see what i did there? lol) said that he has shot Kodak Polaroids for 20 years and knows how to use the film developer machine at the front of the store, and he said "therefore i know more then you do." I just told the woman that this is two models old and that if she wanted something that was not an overpriced toy camera to go and get a nikon at the local camera shop.

Oh, and @nikodoby i only get to use my mother's van when im their house :p Its not an everyday thing.

I suppose it'd be asking a bit much for them to give you commission on the sale. Still, they should've at least said thank you.

The sales guy was with another customer so she walks over to the canon section and asks me, "Have you ever heard of Nikon? Are they a good brand?" I smile and say, "I think I've heard of them before." :^)

I'd love to have been a fly on the wall for the discussions that led up to this. You really have to wonder what leads people to think something like this is a good idea, even as a limited edition. Personally, I'd like to see what would happen if companies would do limited runs of things where the differences were functional, rather than just stylistic. If Leica (to quote only the most glaring example) can command thousands more just for covering something in ostrich leather or peacock feathers, why couldn't a manufacturer like Nikon or Canon put together a limited edition camera that actually has a USEFUL feature that people might gladly pay extra for? Tweak something with the video functionality, for instance, or a sensor with off-the-charts low noise/high ISO performance? If the limited sells out quickly, you've got a good idea of whether a feature has legs and can decide whether to roll it out on a wider scale in future models.

Does the Pentax marketing department do LSD?
