I admit I thought the drop in filter had special threads so no normal filter would fit, I knew it was a 52mm though, I should pay more attention since I have the drop in filter.

I am going to go really off the wall but could you take big bertha and stack a TC-E 2.0 and 1.4, would they physically fit together, of course picture quality at this point might be worthless. You would have a 1120mm f8, since I believe you already have all that.

msmoto... I suppose you're right, although it is more accessibly priced than "Big Bertha". We could discuss what a smart shopper I was if I didn't own the 300 f/2.8 as well. ;~}

hmmm. I've been thinking about this. While I'd like to go longer, the new bodies allow me to take the 200-400 f/4.0 up to a 400-800 with a 2X TC. That seems a really fun range, so I need to do some careful evaluation. I'm thinking that the 24-120 f/4 VR would be really nice. However, while doing AF fine tuning on the new body, my 85 f/1.8 is too far out to work with the body (I'm guessing I'd need about -23). So I'm debating saving for the 85 f/1.4G. That having been said, I'd really like to learn to use the 85 Micro PCE.

So many lenses and never enough money!

D400.....maybe.....if Knee-con ever gives us one.

And, to clarify the "drop in" 52mm filter on the 400mm f/2.8, it is a drop in filter holder. The filter itself is a standard 52mm screw in filter, made by many folks. And, the decision re: 400/f/2.8 vs 500mm f/4.0....obviously a slight price difference, but now, that the D4 will focus at f/8, one could get 1000mm with the TC-20EIII on the 500mm, vs, 800mm w/ the 400mm. I do not know anyone who has experienced this in regards to any focus problems, i.e., speed of focus in continuous servo, etc., following, and other dynamic characteristics of action photography. I do know the 400mm is so unbelievable in this respect, I can without hesitation recommend this. And the difference between 800 and 1000mm is not that big. And, in some situations, anything longer than 400mm would be too long. The $1000 USD is most likely the biggest factor.

If the rumors are true, my next target is the D600. I already have ranges from 24mm to 85mm covered with FX compatible lenses. Because of that, it wont be an issue switching from DX since 95% of what I do is in this range anyway :)

I need a new camera!

My D90 is ooooolld, and very tired. Duct-tape is holding down the flash, and I just can't get teh results I used to.

Next on list - either D400, or maybe D700?? Can't decide, but I wish Nikon would hurry up and make some announcements.

I can't afford the ££'s of the D800, as it would cost me the same in a pc upgrade! and lenses.

Next purchase...polarizing filters and 10 f/stop ND filter for Big Berttha...

I am going to assume big bertha is the 400mm 2.8, I have not really looked into it but who else makes filters for this lens besides Nikon. I might need to read the manual again but the only filter I thought was an option was the polarizer made by Nikon, the 52mm drop in type.

While I am at it figure I would put somewhat of a wishlist down. I was really eyeballing the 135mm DC but saw the patent on the 135mm f1.8, not that it means they will make it though. Honestly I am not sure the .2 difference is that big, but probably will hold off any purchase for about a year and a half so I can go play in the sandbox. I would be looking at a D800E but by the time I get to use it well something newer might be out that I want more.

Probably a 250 gig to 500 or larger gig hard drive for my old white plastic MacBook. I love the computer to death, it's the last of the MacBooks where you can actually swap out some of the internals quite easily.

And it's not like I'm moving massive files- they're 6 mp D40 files so I won't need a massive speed upgrade.

I am now processing those images and I must thank everyone who noted that this was a lens well worth aquiring. You were very much correct in your insgihts and advice!

Tell me about it, I feel I've outgrown the D3000 a long time ago but the rest of the kit is more important to me for now. While I would love to have the 105mm, it's a bit too expensive for me, at least for the next couple of years. If the D600 turns out to be the camera I'll upgrade to I'll probably replace the 85mm macro with the 60mm instead. This may seem counter intuitive but I actually wouldn't mind a shorter working distance for shooting bugs.

You should save for it...especially since you like macro work so much. Maybe look for a used or refurbished one. The 60 might be a decent option though. It is nice to have the VR on the 105. Ha or you can do whatever you want with your budget ;)
