Thanks for your responses. I went through the pictures now. There were 13 shots in a little bit more than seven minutes. Probably quite high power level since I needed the background to be very white. Actually I used iTTL with +0.7 EV on the flash so I'm not sure on the power level.

My guess is that with the wide panel (which makes the "lamp" go into the front position") and high power level there might be a problem (If we are thinking firmware - does the overheating stuff take +EV into account?). Or, maybe, I just was unlucky and got a faulty flash that was doomed...

Anyway, I spoke to Nikon support and the flash will be sent to them today.

I have shot hundreds of shots with my two sb-700 and had no issues. I have used them on camera, with CLS and with a sc-29, even with an SC and a remote. I shoot them as much as I can on whatever power is needed. No issues.

The only trouble I have had is one the the battery doors is a bit hard to open, and after numerous high power shots I have to wait a bit before I can soot more. Not really a big deal.

That doesn't sound good at all :-(
CO - Do you know what power your flash was firing at ?
I've just got a SB-700 over Christmas and have been shooting with the wide panel.
I guesstimate I didn't take any photos above 1/2 power with at least 10 seconds between shots.
I can't see any signs of damage to the flash lens but will be careful until there's more info on this.
I'm still very pleased with how the SB-700 performs though.

Let us all close our eyes, meditate and mumble "fiiiiiirmwaaaaaaare".

Seriously, I do have the SB-700 and shot about a dozen pictures with no issues, but am curious what will come of this.

I was taking a photos with my new SB-700. The wide angle panel was in use while I was doing this. The session was something like arranging the stuff to be photografed, taking a few pictures, replacing the stuff with other items and so on. Suddenly the flash sounded different. When I looked the front lens of the SB-700 is smoked on the insided. It does however still work. I thought that I was safe since I didn't do any high frequency shooting and the overheating protection is in place. Did I miss anything or is this just bad luck?

Regards

CO
