Tamron makes a 18-250, Tokina doesn't.
Tamron caps are crap. Tokina caps are the equal of Nikon ones. (/me ducks!)

That might be the one, it's been a while since I've held his camera. I didn't like that cap.

It's a Canon, I am allergic to Canons.

My whole family seems to be stuck on them. That cousin has an XSi, while another one has a 60D with a grip too.

Sigh...

I just bought the same lens. It arrived fine but because I like to keep a UV filter on all my lenses, and the filter I ordered was so slim it could not take a standard lens cap (satisfactorily), I use it with the filter and a B&W 80mm push-on lens cap. This setup works well but I also worry about this B&W cap falling off, it is definitely less secure than the standard lens cap. At least I have a filter on there if it does fall off. No problems so far though! As far as the two go, I think the Nikon and Tokina lens caps are pretty much created equal. Both are nice but will have trouble mounting on the slimmest filters. Love the lens too.

I've seen my cousin's Tokina 18-250, I don't really like the cap, but like others have said, I don't think that's your biggest issue.

Glad you seem to have gotten that fixed though.

The cap on the tokina 12-24 seems to be fine. I hate to say it but its better then some nikon caps. Then again I might have been lucky. Let us know how they handle the scratched lens.

It's a good lens cap. If you're using one of the thinner filters that are designed to reduce vignetting on wide-angle lenses, it doesn't stay on very well—but then, neither would the Nikon caps you're considering.

Thanks!

The lens I am returning. I've already given B&H pictures and a detailed description so they can figure out if they pursue it with THK or UPS.

I was wondering if I should be worried about the lens cap itself (and buy a Nikon to replace it) since I travel with my camera alot.
I put thin glass or filters on my lenses anyways, but wouldn't want my filter getting scratched (Its a coated Hoya I have from my film days). If I understand correctly from the replies, this is an unusual event; no systematic issue with Tokina lense caps.

Are you worried about the scratched up lens, or the lens cap itself?
If I were you, I'd be worried about the lens, and contact B&H to let them know you'll be sending it back for a refund. As for the lens cap, don't worry about it. No, lens caps should not fall off in transit, but it can happen. I ship lots of lenses all over the world, without incident. But, as a camera dealer for many years, I can tell you that anything can happen - and probably will, and it is not always anyone's fault.

I would have returned a damaged package w/o opening it. Since you opened it I would contact B+H and tell them your story. Fuck the lens cap, the situation is unacceptable regardless. Send back the lens.

That said, I do replace my Tokinas cap with a Nikon ones, but that's me being a obsessive compulsive idiot. Tokina lens caps are very nice.

Are you trying to shoot long exposures with the lens cap on? If the lens cap fell off during transit I'd return it immediately for a refund. It's obviously a faulty lens cap, but maybe Nikon can fix it with a firmware update so you might want to wait. We should start an online petition to make sure they address the issue.

Hi! I got Tokina 11-16/2.8 from B&H: the lense cap was not attached as recieved from UPS and had scratched up the front lense surface. The corrugated box it was shipped in was also severely bashed up (though the Tokina box inside looked pristine). I've owned 28-70/2.8 for 14 years and never had the original lense cover pop off in transit. I've read suggestion to get Tokina lense cap replaced with Nikon. Is this very common occurance? Would it have popped off in shipping or would it have to have been incorrectly installed to begin with? Please advise anyone with experience with newer Tokina lenses.
