Lots of zeros don't scare me, as long as they are to the left of the most significant digit. Its those pesky ones on the right of the most significant digit that are problematic...

Interesting topic, but I'd have to say "no" probably not. Even if they did the cost would scare just about anyone off except maybe large publications like National Geographic or huge corporations like NASA. I heard 1200mm lenses were made for the US military in the past, with an insane price tag. Can't remember the cost except there were a lot of zeros...

I would want a light af-s dx vr zoom lens that's easy to carry around, and have a metal mount.
A little more reach than the 55-200 vr .

something to carry hiking and not too expensive, so I would not spend a month crying if it got damaged. good for vacations, fishing camping going out in the wilderness etc. and does not draw too much attention to itself.

and down to 55 on the wide end.

300 on the long end would be nice.......dreaming

but wait.....we have that don't we ? good going nikon.

If it was just paint or grip colors that is not too big of a deal.
Actual lenses though - not a chance.

Each one would have to be hand made. Leica for example has stated it takes 10 years for 1 lens re-design. A full new lens is about 5 years more to get the quality. To have a custom lens would take multiple years and cost 100's of thousands if not a million of dollars since it would take a group of lens designers focusing just on one lens, for years. At that point no one could afford it. It would be almost like a custom government job.

No one cranks lenses out just on a whim. There are years in re-designs and new designs take a very long time.

I'd like it if Nikkor updated their lineup so that they have metal manual focus lenses with electronic contacts. Make it relatively cheap and it should be cool.

Maybe you could request old discontinued lenses, like the weird fisheyes that went into the mirror box, but anything else might be too prohibitively expensive.

I'd like an AF-S Nikkor 800mm F/5.6G ED VR II NanoCrystalCoat.

I'll bet they're working on it. Can't go too long without a competitor to Canon's flagship lens, even if they won't sell many. It's a prestige thing.

What I'd REALLY like Nikon to make is a 300-800/5.6 like Sigma's. But their's would probably cost at least twice as much :(

That'd be just fine for me. And try to get it reasonably light weight, as Canon have done with their excellent 800mm.

If they did make an 18-200 2.8, it'd be too long to carry in your backpack anyway. Would defeat the purpose

Why would it have to be long? I would assume they could get it near the 70-200 size. It would just weigh a ton. I could deal with carrying it if they made it ;)

I think the cost would be prohibitive for this service. A "1 run" of a lens would put production costs through the roof I would think.

I doubt it. Maybe if a mass specifically requests it. Imagine them releasing a exotic 1200mm 5.6 like the canons. Worth 100,000 and 6 or so made. I'd love to see something like that in prime range as well like a 13mm or new noct lenses.

I'd love to see a special leica/nikkor mix of a 50 .95 or F/1

Could Nikon possibly have made to order lenses?

Like Warner Brother's allows a lot of their classic VHS movies to be made to order on DVD/Blu-Ray.

I mean like what if you wanted a NEW 80-200mm AF-S or some exotic lens like a 1200-1700mm.

I mean they'd cost a lot but I figure professionals would be willing to pay.

Only problems I see is they are already lagging on meeting the demand of their products, so manufacturing and retooling for old designs might be an issue.
