I'm with Niko on this one. Just get a new one for the difference of 50 dollars. Its questionable if the lense is ever the same after repairs anyways.

The difference is probably zero, as I'll bet one can sell the lens on eBay in its current state for said $50.

Try Bernie Barge at PHO-TECH in Hesston, Kansas. I not allowed to give you the link, but he does have a web site. Just google PHO-TECH. I've used him for years for everything from Hasselblad to Leica. He is an authorized Nikon repair station. Good Luck.

Hi,

In my years of having things repaired $150-250 for major repair of a auto lens seems right.

I just had two lenses - a f2.8 105 macro and an older 70-300mm zoom clean and checked at the Nikon facility at El Segundo. It was $135 apiece with extra for shipping. They really did _do_ any thing other than some diagnostics work and bench checking. While it is piece of mind, it is sort of pricey to know that the lenses were alright when they arrived.

We, and of the places I've worked over the years, have never used anything but Nikon Service locations.

Good luck and my best,

Mike

The lens is pristine minus the AF. The glass is perfect which is sometimes hard to find used. Used ones on ebay are going for $200+, certified ones are $250 - so I'm slightly ahead.

It wouldn't be that bad if the repair shops would be honest and say that they did not have the parts (AF motor) on hand. So far this little endeavor has taken about 7 weeks now.

Thank you everyone. The local shop is trying one more place In Michigan. I'm in Nebraska so there is no one here that does repairs anymore. Has anyone tired or used KEH?

I'm $36 in shipping cost already and probably $150 for the repair - this stinks. Evidently no one can get parts from Nikon which all of them said that is really odd for a lens design of it's age. Maybe an update coming soon? Who knows.

TaoTeared, if all else fails I could put you in touch with a professional Nikon repair shop where I live in Seoul South Korea? They will fix anything its like a Nikon essembly line. I even had a 50mm front element fixed there. Shipping might be a killer, but it all depends though.

Just so happens my D7000 took a spill off my Tripod a couple weeks ago. Fortunately my Tamron 17-50 took the brunt of the impact, virtually separated the mount from the barrel of the lens. I debated trashing the lens until I came across UnitedCamera (add the .com at the end) and I have nothing but good things to say about them. They were fast, affordable and very friendly to work with. My Tamron is as good as new and a tad bit sharper. I would definitely use them again.

Why not just buy a used one then?

Names are Okay, just no http://www.joerepairslenses.com links. It would also help if you said where you are.

Nope sorry can't let you put links in this thread Tao. Can't say this one thread is OK for links and then delete links in other threads.

Did you try Nikon? Even if they are out of warranty they can still do repairs. You'll just have to pay for it.

I'm looking for lens repair businesses and would like some help.

Local camera shop has sent my lens(24mm 2.8 AFD) to two places now to have the AF fixed and so far both places do not have parts or can not get any. I am hopeful that I can find a shop that still has parts.

I realize that we normally do not allow many links to businesses but I am hoping that we can make an exception as long as we can keep all advertisements out of this thread.

Thanks for the help!
