D7000 Advantages: High ISO, Higher MP, Better Video, Dynamic Range, Better Metering,

D300S Advantages: Better Controls, More AF Points

You are going to pay @ $1000 for a used D300S or a brand new D7000 for $200 more. I would get the D7000, you will be happy with it.

FYI: I shoot with a D700, and to me the controls are important, but image quality trumps that.

speaking of image quality, one thing I know is that D7000 has a very high dynamic range, it's the second highest to Pentax K-5 in sensor ranking. Check out DxO Lab. That's all I know, not sure about color.

I've compared the specs of the D7000 and the D300s a few times but still haven't made up my mind, so I'm seeking the advice of other Nikon enthusiasts. I've been shooting with a D40x for about two years and I think I've outgrown the camera. I can afford to buy a D7000 kit, but I'd still like to get the best deal. There quite a few D300s bodies on eBay that end up selling for less than $1000. Photo quality is a lot more important to me than video quality, and low-light performance is also a priority.

So what do people think? My inclination is to go for a good deal on a 300s body and spend the extra money on glass, but for some reason the 7000 is appealing to me. Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks.
