If you read the manual, you'd find out that the flap is for attaching AC power directly to the camera.

Hey All,

I found this really strange rubber grommet/flap on my D7000. It's where your pinky sits when holding the camera and gives access to the battery compartment (reveals the battery and you can see the genuine nikon hologram)

Any idea what for? I was thinking in case of vent from the battery....
