@ ar_d3s funny you should say that. The guy is looking for a place to print this. He thinks it is going to be at least 35 feet/10.6 meters wide. I also agree with everyone here. Not really exciting, in terms of the panorama itself, but i think it would be rather neat to see it printed and up close.

@Michael DeRose ... sry I wasn't paying attention to the authors ... well I guess that since he was experimenting with the London one and get much better with the Budapest one :)

I started thinking here, that while sucha panorama does not serve an artistic purpose, then it would serve as a kind of an historic marker and it would be great to look at such a detailed panoramic of your home town in 10 years and why not make a new one in 10 years.

Gigapan panoramics, or any panoramics that were automated, are not interesting to me, unless they involve some human aspect to the control of the shots. I shoot my panoramics manually, with a hand held trigger, and on a normal tripod. I use photoshop to stitch them together, and I actually make an effort to print them out.

These gigapan shots don't appeal to me unless they are printed. It may hold a record for world's largest (digital) panoramic, but not world's largest printed panoramic taken by a traditional digital or film camera.

I have experimented with shooting panoramics, I have one of North/Little Rock, Arkansas that is 28 feet long and 14 inches tall. I took 52 vertical images from left to right, using a Nikon D3s with a 600mm f/8 lens. the stitched photoshop file is at 300 dpi and is over 3.5 gb, which makes it even more difficult to edit on computer. It is a photo that I do plan on printing it at actual size. I also have a scaled down version printed on 4x6 photo paper.

Just for Shizz and giggles, there is a person that had to be blurred because he/she was nude in the bathroom. Its like playing wheres waldo.

Yes imagine what you could do if there was something appealing to the eye all the way acrossed like geometric shapes, crazy architecture shapes or strange weather patterns. Ahh you can always imagine or in this case dream of catching a shot like that! Thats why we keep shooting I guess! :)

I agree, impressive as the data is, I think the photo's just boring.

But that's not the point of the photo. :D

Wow really 400mm? It doesn't seem like it more like a 24-70 or similar zoom range focal length. The distortion indicates so, but I might be getting fooled because of the fused pixels and extreme stiching.

I believe that is the largest, in general, but this (the london pic) is the largest 360 panorama. The sugar loft is "only" 221.5 degrees wide.

I saw somewhere that he did this with a 400mm prime. Im a novice in all things photography, so i dont know if thats normal or not.

On the upside,the guy said this was to just learn how to stitch all the pictures together. He went on to talk about the panorama being rather flawed. Also, @ monty, this is the same guy that did the Budapest one. : )

@ kanuck, i thought the grand canyon would be cool too. Alas, i was disappointed as well. Maybe they should try ancient ruins in Rome or Greece.

At least the spots are interesting, but agreed a gigapixel of a really cool spot would be special. How about the Wave in Arizona, or some shocking slums in India for example? I saw a gigapixel of the Grand Canyon and thought it would be impressive, but I was disappointed. There is a lot of distortion in this image like you say Monty I guess the guy used a zoom instead of the recommended primes like a 28 or 35mm. I like to use a Zeiss for panoramas but I have failed to find a spot to maximize the potential of a panorama.

I'm starting to get tired of the 360-degree ever biggest city panoramas. I'm still waiting for someone to find a really brilliant location and making a brilliant gigapixel panorama, until then it is just a panorama for the sake of those gigapixels. The only one that was a bit more interesting was the Budapest one (the one where the bottom edge was lined with the pillars).

Also the London one has very strong distortion when you are zoomed out which is a bit disturbing.

But today I discovered something new ... there can be sunshine even with total cloud cover.

I did some digging, and found out that a man by the name of Jeffrey Martin did this. It is made up of a collection of 7,886 shots and was edited on a special computer that has dual 6 core CPUs, 192 GB of ram, and a 4gb graphics card!!! I looked all over to see if i could find out what kind of camera he used, but no luck.

Wow thats amazing! Thank you for sharing that with use. The computer specs were impressive that he listed to make the image, I wonder what camera was used? The image is quite detailed and clear considering the size.

The world record holder is of the city of London. It is an 80 GIGAPIXEL photo!!!!
