And there is a VC version now too!

I'd go for the non-VC version. It's reportedly sharper than the VC and it is lighter. And it's only about 450 vs 650.

I've read that this is a fine lens but after you go beyond the 50-55mm focal length it gets slow and requires lots of light thus making it excellent for outside/bright sunlight but not great for overcast or near sunset. That makes me give more consideration to the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. I don't like the double-tube extension of the Tokina 16-50 and the Nikon is just too expensive.

Tamron 17-50 is an excellence lense. you will use these focal length most of the time.

Do you like really wide angle shots? The 17-55 is a fantastic heavy lens, but not very wide on DX. You mentioned you like the 18-50 end, but you might really miss the wide end. Remember the 18-50 lens is basically a 28-70 lens on the DX format. Maybe grab the 17-55 and purchase a cheaper wide angle lens like a Sigma? Wide angle is essential for travel shot especially for landscapes.

That's hard to answer since I gather you are somewhat new to photography. It is a great lens that can really grab allot of scenery. If you are doing allot of traveling, I would suggest adding the 18-200 VR. With those two, you can photograph almost everything.

I like overlapping my zooms since it always seems that I swap those just as much as my primes and always wanting "just a little more reach or just a little wider."

Be sure to add an additional battery!

Happy Travels!

Well in your first post you said that you just got the lens with the D7000, so it seems that you haven't had it long and you haven't had the chance to use it the way it is meant to be used. If you sell it thats fine, but you might find yourself on vacation wishing you didn't. Its a great lens for street photography, landscape, and indoor events. I think if you find a place to use it you will love it.

The 17-55 is a very nice lens, I got to use it in NYC this week when my friend traded me for my 28-70 for the day. The wide end made me more them happy, I only missed the long end I can get on my lens.

My recommendation: Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. My first post on this forum was a long comparison between the tamron and and the nikkor and optically they're very similar. The build of the Nikon is miles ahead, but I've had the tamron for three years now as my main walkaround lens and it's still going strong despite the beating it has taken. The front got jarred loose once, but it was an easy five minute fix and wasn't affecting pictures in any case.

(like I said, kind of long but to sum it up: no optical difference, really. http://nikonrumors.com/forum/topic.php?id=667 )

Hey Everyone,

I was hoping to get everyones opinion on what i should do. I recently got into photography and loving it, i bought the D7000 with the lens kit as well as purchasing the Nikon Ultra Wide Lens (10-24mm)... Do you think i should sell it and get the Nikon 17-55mm? I noticed my focal length is between 18-50mm. So i would assume the 17-55 would be a good lens..but I always wanted to get into landscape especially since i'll be going traveling Asia and Stateside (NY...etc). I am just not sure what to do..\

Inputs would be greatly appreciated.
