Kelby video on D4 thread - golf posted it. WT-5 is only compatible with the D4 and nothing else.

There are a few wireless "hacks" for wifi transfers I have seen, but never tried. I know there are options out there from 3rd parties as well. I wouldn't give up on all hope.

Thanks for the actual experince using the eyefi cards. I obviously can't using my current camera but in the future I know what its limitations are. I don't really plan on getting a WT-4 because of the horror stories and the price, its even more expensive than the WT-5 that is supposed to be much better (well until someone actually uses it, its all speculation for now).

I really wish the WT-5 was backwards compatable with older model cameras. I think at one point I saw two versions of it as the WT-5 and a WD-5 but maybe it was a typo becuase the second one is not listed on Nikons site. I can see where the wireless setup for the D200 won't work but now that its pretty much a plug and play USB connection what makes the WT-5 so special. Maybe the WT-5 uses a connection that is on the D4 that other cameras don't have but I would think it is still a USB connection, but have not looked into it that much.

scoobysmak said:
Well the reason I am asking is, I was asked to come back for another wrestling tournament. Needless to say this is a low budget set up but if I could stay on the floor and transfer my photos to a computer it would help.

I have a couple of eyefi and even the 8gig proX2 and it is not made for "actual" work. Delay times are about 5-10 min and each photo will take about 1 min to transfer (Jpeg). I had 400 photos from a walk one day and it took about 6 hrs to transfer. The battery was dead afterwords as well. Auto shut-off/ sleep modes effect it as well.

It is great if you come from a short walk and you have a few photos and it transfers automatically (if you leave the camera on) but for many photos, it is not practical for large shoot venues.

That said, I have two of them and they are great for what they do.

I've just started using the Eye-fi Pro X2 and find that when shooting RAW the large files are not at all fast in transferring to PC. Small to medium .jpg's are pretty quick though.

Doubtless things will improve in the future, but I still prefer it to fiddly connectors with insertion lives.

If you have the D7000 it would work out well for you. With the D700, I would probably see about renting the WT-4. People really do think it is cool when you do this.

Needless to say this is a low budget set up but if I could stay on the floor and transfer my photos to a computer it would help. I know I could pretty much do the same thing with using multiple CF cards and use a runner but if the photos showed up right in a folder, it would be one less step to eliminate.

My 2 year old daughter wanders around with a point-and-shoot taking pictures of things. Inside of a few seconds, the pictures are on the main workstation at home for review and laughter

I really really love it

And, I really really wish they had a CF version but they don't see any P&L in such a small market (compared to the SD market)

That sounds like a good setup. On the D7000 I write RAW to the first card slot and small, compressed JPEG to the Eye-Fi in the #2 slot. That way uploads are really quick and for most web applications are more than good enough.

That worked great on vacation last summer. We looked through the pictures each evening when we were slowing down for the day.

I use an eye-fi card in the second slot of my D7000. Then it transfers to my Android tablet which can be located in a backpack. I do this out hiking and cross-country skiing. Works fine. But it is not instantaneous. Nevertheless, it provides a pathway to viewing photos among friends almost immediately and is better than the screen on the camera for such viewing. Once back home, photos are automatically uploaded to the eye-fi site, where, if you wish, they can be downloaded to other computers.

Having used the Eye-Fi (and I love it for what it is) you would not want to do this with the Eye-Fi card at something as large as a wedding. The range of the card is really limited, but works fine if you have your iPhone or iPad on your person so it doesn't need to reach too far.

I can run mine with my phone set up as a hotspot and then connect the Eye-Fi to the phone and the iPad to the phone and I'm set. Range that way is probably close to 100' (30 meters) in an open room. Beyond that it would be a bit iffy. If you just push the pictures to your phone and have it relaying to something that is connected to a full WiFi network you could go further.

I've done it with parades with the scouts and had the phone just push everything to Facebook as I shoot, but then I have to be a lot more selective of my shots so as not to push hundreds of pictures through. It is fun to do when you have a need.

@SkintBrit, I think part of it is about patents. Eye-Fi holds the patent for doing this in SD, I'm guessing someone else beat them to the patent for CF and then never went to market, but still wants big bucks to allow it to happen.

No, they don't do a CF card scooby, but some people use them with SD to CF adapters with varying degrees of success. I have always found it strange why they don't make a CF version, as you would think the extra size would make it's manufacture easier and cheaper. Maybe it's just down to the fact that more devices use SD?

The eye-fi cards look pretty neat but I don't seem to find anything for CF cards. Did I miss something or they just don't make them. If they don't make any I guess if I want a wireless transfer to a computer my best option is the WT-4 (D700). I am open to other suggestions, I really wish the new WT-5 would work but hey I can't have it all.

Ever since the eye-fi cards came out. I've considered the idea of going to a wedding, giving 3-4 cheap cameras to some kids with eye-fi's and having the images go live to a screen.

it really makes for some cool experiences

You should be able to do that with Eye-Fi if there is Wifi transmission available in the hall . If not, then you'll need Mi-Fi , the device that works with your 3G mobile phone to create & transmit wifi signal - $150 or so ...

Recently I attended my first military ball and I noticed the photographer's pictures going up on the surrounding HDTV's in the banquet hall moments after shooting. I caught up with the guy who was working with a D300 and the Nikon WT4 Wireless Transmitter. Was really too drunk to remember asking, or too drunk to remember what he said (if anything) about the system. After seeing the price of it ($700!) I was wondering if the Eye-Fi cars could/would do the same thing?
