Thanks Drab, yes that seems sensible, thanks for the clarification. Basically you're saying if ANY file is being written to the card, it can't be a problem with the card or the CF port.

Unless the two types of files are in different directories and you have a very specific type of filesystem corruption, yes, if any type file is being written correctly consistently and one is not it can not be a storage problem.

I had a similar problem with my D700. I had set to take raw and jpeg but the camera refused to take jpeg. I removed the battery, flash, put it back, play with my lenses, did a reset of the "shooting menu bank" and "custom setting bank" and did a fromat of the card.

I don't know what fixed it but I never saw this behavior again.

SkintBrit said:
As the problem is intermittent, I would think it was unlikely that a bent pin would be the cause of the problem, I would have thought that this would cause an issue constantly (unless there was a bad connection), but it seemed logical to eliminate that possibility? I am not familiar with the term "data-agnostic" Drab, help me out?

data-agnostic means the CF subsystem doesn't know (or care) what you are writing. Therefore if 15 MB of jpg write successfully and 15 MB of nef doesn't, it can not be a a failure of the CF subsystem.

Get a torch and look into the empty CF card slot on your body, try and see if any of the pins are bent.

No harm in checking for physical damage, good suggestion.

The CF interface (any storage interface for that matter) is data-agnostic.
If (more than one) JPEG works and RAW doesn't, one can safely remove the CF card and associated interface from the list of items to investigate.

Hi Kristy
Are you using one Compact flash card when this happens or does it happen to all the cards you use?
Which brand of card is it?
Get a torch and look into the empty CF card slot on your body, try and see if any of the pins are bent.

Hi Kristy, just for the record, that is exactly how I have my D700 set up. I like being able to email a small jpeg to family and friends straight from the card, without having to reduce the raw image just for that purpose. I have had it set up like this for several months and have never experienced your problem. As Adamz says, might be worth checking that the top panel confirms your setting each time you use it, but hopefully it was just a glitch. Come back to us if it happens again and we can put our collective heads together and look into it further.

Thanks for the suggestions....
The only reason I shoot JPEG basic is so that I can see them in my pictures, to select which RAW images to edit in PS4.
The last 2 photo sessions it's been behaving better...so we'll hope it was just a very preliminary problem, and that it's gone for good.
Thanks again,
Cheers.

I'm recording pictures on my new D700 in RAW + Jpeg basic...and sometimes the camera doesn't seem to record the jpeg basic (only the RAW) and other times it does. Does anyone else have this problem as well??
