Either way, I think photographers are in for more than a few treats over the next few years as digital cameras start to possibly match slide film quality. Some may argue that we already have slide film quality if your photoshop skills are good enough. Remember how amazed your were when the D3 first came out? The specs seemed unreal so prepare to become wowed again! :)

I thought that the concensus was that we have enough megapixels now, and that what we need is wider dynamic range and lower noise?

Seems like everything doubles every four years or is at least running at 4mp increase every 2. 16, 18, 22, 24, 28, 32- just mostly hard drive fillers for me. Watched a friend this weekend sell 25 photos at an art show - all shot with a D70s. Next to her was a guy touting he took them with a Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III and he didn't sell a thing.

Old news. We've know that canon has been working on a 30 plus megapixel replacement for the 1Ds for about a year now. Sony is also rumored to be working on a high mp sensor for the a900 replacement so naturally that always gets associated with a potential Nikon model too. I've even heard of 40 and 50mp DSLR models being "tested/prototyped"! Nothing concrete though, just a bunch of rumors :^)

I just posted a link that I'm sure a lot of you saw in that the D800 rumors are out again this time calling for a February 2011 date now based on a French Book that will come out then. I have heard so much junk on the D700 refresh that I usually don't read into it much anymore, but this rumor had me wondering. Either way, the D800 wouldn't be Nikon flagship camera anyways, just mimic the D3x best features, with maybe a touch better ISO performance and video? Come to think of it, it would be better! haha

Nikon is not cheap, they've never been, which is why many consumers go to Canon, also Canon can afford to have lower prices since it's bigger and have more production facilities.

Plus the D3X competes with medium format and it's 8K price is well below those cameras and since most people rent MF cameras the D3X is priced so some shooters who don't need higher MPs could own it.

Nikon is very photographer oriented so they make cameras for certain types of photographer.

The ONLY thing many of us look for on a D700 replacement is HD video about in the category of the D7000. The high mega-pixel mentality is very misleading. I own and shoot a number of DSLR cameras and every time Canon releases a new flagship camera I go test it to see if it is worth buying. What Nikon DOES need to fix is the price on a camera like the D3x which may wok for big budget pros but the reason that camera costs so much is the level of hand work and detail. The camera could have been sold at a lower price, have the same quality within reason, but the market simply does not have a place for a DSLR camera sold at any appreciable volume at over $4,000 for the body.
