From what I read the D7k allows 2+/- stops of over or under exposure for bracketing, vs. 5+/- for the D300s. I think the cut off is still limited to 3 shots, vs up to 9 with the D300s. Small things about the D7k like that tell me that we will see a D400, DX format camera.

Yes. The D7000 is very tempting. It doesn't help I'm becoming impatient with my current body. The D400 or D7K will be a significant upgrade for me. I'll probably compare feature sets between the D400 and D7K and see what's the best fit. One thing I haven't been able to determine yet is the bracketing features of the D7K. Anyone know off the cuff?

i'll have to admit, after having switched to FX, and albeit the noise is "prettier" at higher iso's, nice to have a brighter VF, actual FOV. . .I kinda miss the multiplication factor. . .so as part of my equipment strategy, I decided to get a Gen 2 FX body cheap, and a Gen 3 DX body as a pair - there's no way I could afford or justify a Gen 3 FX.

And given how much Nikon invested into the sensors for the D3100 and D7000, I'm almost AFRAID that the Gen 3 DX sensors will be comparable to the Gen 2 FX. . .NOW THAT's EVOLUTION!

The D300 is still too good of a camera, and I can't do without focus and metering dedicated selectors anyway.

+1 I want the DX line to continue due to my use of the "lense extender" sensor size. (Oh, don't give me that #$*% about just cropping an FX image or buying bigger glass - birders and wildlife shooters know why I want to keep DX around.)

Exactly right, those of us who shoot macro and wildlife don't need no stinkin' FX!

Warprints is totally right about the DX versus FX situation. I use my DX cameras way more than my D700 FX. All that said it seems to me the D400 better be a big step up like the D300 was. I still use the D300 and just could not justify going to the D300s which I have seen some great photos taken with it. I am getting the D7000 but my biggest step up will be the D700 replacement. My guess is that full frame video at any sensible level is a tough chore for the bigger sensor. I have the wide glass covered. But in the longer tele I still have results with my 70-300VRs (more than one) which proved to me that lens at the right time and place is awesome. The 200-400 are just to big for the kind of in situ photography I do. I still don't expect much of 35mm compared to 8x10 for scenery.

Still got my d300, which is doing fine in combo with a GH1 for video. I'm hoping to replace both with either the D300S or D700 replacement, depending on cost/features.

I can't wait to see wait to see what it has but I'm going to try to hold off till the following release if my current D300 one holds up - which so far it has. I am trying to upgrade my glass first then I'll worry about the body.

The way it looks and how the market is moving, I'm thinking that there will be a FF in the $1,800 range in another 2 years. By that time I will have all new FF glass and I will really be set.

Nikon pulled in Acura with the d7000...packed amazingly awesome (and what should arguably be more common for the. Avid shooter) features in a not-too-watered-down, competitvely priced package (why acura can hold its own against moreloft brands, tons of features packaged at a modest pricepoint)...

With that said, flagship models are going to be sick!!

If Acuras wouldn't look so damn ugly, they'd be selling much more cars. Their products are sound, but their cars look so ugly.

I think the D400 is gonna be an awesome camera, and probably cost 1,800

This is an exciting time to be shooting Nikon, we are seeing them step things up even more in the DSLR arena and they are really going to give the competition a run for the money.

The D3100 caught people by suprise because of how good it was. Especially seeing as how the D3000 was sort of underwhelming.

The D7000 was released and spec'd in a way it is almost too good to be true. The other brands are putting thier new models on the table, and nikon slams down the D7000 and says "BEAT THAT!" leaving the other brands sitting there staring at the D7000 with thier mouths open wondering what they can possible say.

The D7000 is truly a statement camera. Not only did the D7000 come out with the specs that were rumored and many were highly doubeted, but it suprised even more with more pro features like MLU, intervalometer, AF fine tuning, the ability to work with Non-CPU lenses, etc, which nobody expected or believed it would have.

I have no doubt Nikon will continue this trend, and if they keep this up for anyone coming into the world of DSLR's it will be a no brainer on which brand to chose. It seems a lot of D300/s shooters are a bit annoyed by this camera and all of its abilities and how many people consider it to be better than the d300s, rather than be annoyed i would be eagerly looking to see what is in the future for the D300 line. It will be one helluva beast, and probably piss off a lot of FX shooters.

lol

I'm not waiting. Initially, I was saving up for the D300 replacement, then the D300s came out... at this point (non-professional photog, graduate school), the D7000 seems to have everything I think I need/want. If the D7000 somehow doesn't meet my needs, I may sell it if the D400 seems more appropriate/appealing. I figure though, that unless it offers some sick DR and low light performance, I'll likely just bide my time until FF seems appropriate.
