go tit on my nex yesterday - they finally added the mac version :), I like the customizable soft buttons, but apart from that I'm looking forward to see some new glass for this camera, as the pencake lens is... not as reliable as I would like it to be :)
anyway, got a new toy on wednesday and playing with it right now, so my nex is hidden in it's sock... and no it's not the d7000 I'm talking about

What's wrong with the pancake lens? Focus issues?

What sort of toy?

In all the D7000 hype I missed the announcement of new firmware for the NEX and just thought I'd give other owners a heads up in case they missed it too (that's you, Adam).

Main improvements: customizable soft buttons (ISO setting is ONE button away now!) and aperture control in movie mode (I've been using nikon lenses when I cared). I'm off to download it now.

Yeah I totally agree JorPet. People always find the littlest things to complain about when something "exciting" comes along. I remember people complaining that the NEX was too big because of the lenses and that they would prefer a fixed lens compact with an APS-C sensor. Then when such a camera comes out they complain that it "sucks" because it's a fixed lens and isnt' wide enough or long enough, etc.etc. And I'm talking about overall reactions in various photo forums not just here.

I really wish the Nikon P7000 were more like this Fuji X100. That to me would have been a "G12 Killer" for sure! Anyway I'm sure the NEX7 will improve on the NEX 3 and 5. At the moment Sony is offering the greatest variety of APS-C cameras. (NEX mirrorless, AXX Half mirrors, and their traditional DSLRS). I'm holding out for Nikon's EVIL camera and hoping that it has something "special" for F-mount compatibility.

Oh and jonny I wouldn't use "hyperlinks" within your sentences anymore. I'd just include the whole link. Keywords are now automatic "hyperlinks" throughout forum disscussions so it's harder to spot when your links are and aren't "sponsored". Yes I know about the underline but after reading so much text it all starts to look like just yellow links.

Hello people, It has been a while since i last posted on the thread. I hope you are all ok?
I also would like P7000 to be like Fuji, it would of looked brilliant and sexy. Never the less I have ordered my P7000 and hardly can wait to get it.
Regards

I think that for some people, complaining gives meaning to their lives. :P

That Fuji is flat-out amazing. Lately I've been looking at film rangefinders like the Argus that have the fixed focal/fixed lens design as an option for easy, portable film photography, so the idea of a digital that has a similar setup -- to me, anyway -- isn't a sacrifice in the least. Hell, if fixed primes were good enough for Henri Cartier-Bresson, who am I to complain? :)

The price (closer to the Leica X1 than to the P7000)... now, that's something else again. If it were in the 500-600 range, I could easily justify purchasing it as my next backup/"point-and-shoot" option (though it's obviously much more than that). At that price, though... oy vey. I'll have to wait long enough 'til some rich bastard gives it up in favor of the next, newer, shinier gadget. :)

I love that X100. If it wasn't going to be so darned expensive, I would get one. I don't get the whole bit with people complaining about the EV compensation limit of +/-2. You have complete control of shutter speed and aperature and ISO, so there isn't really much of a limit at all, unless you are shooting Auto everything and then who cares?

Adamz has had his longer than me, but I'll just add some about the nikon adapter because I got that in July. It's really nice but kind of defeats the purpose of the smaller body unless I've got a really small lens on there like my 50 1.8 or something. I also bought it for video and it shines there (I love video with the Tokina 11-16 2.8 and it makes the adapter worth every penny). Manual focus is okay—you push one of the soft buttons and it zooms way in on the selected area so you can get the focus right. Definitely wouldn't use it for anything moving.

The kit lens is pretty capable and does decent macro work (a dragonfly image with the kit lens here full size with contrast tweaked in an out of camera jpeg). The image stabilization works well and is awesome for videos of my kids and for stills.

It might be easier to say when I wouldn't use it. I miss faster flash sync than 1/160s when using fill flash outside. I miss a hotshoe so that I can use bounce flash indoors. ISO 1600 is a little more noisy IMO than the D90 at 1600, but I haven't been processing the raw files in Lightroom for very long so I may be wrong there.

I've long shot zone by spot-metering in aperture-priority and dialing in compensation. I find it much more intuitive than changing shutter speed, though that works just as well (and likely many would argue it works better.)

+1 with Vall. The newly announced Fujifilm X100 looks VERY nice. It's got a 12mp APS-C sensor, metal rangefinder like point & shoot sized body, a fixed 23mm f2 lens, and an interesting hybrid viewfinder. The viewfinder can be switched between optical or electronic views! It also shoots HD video too

Jarmo - I have d300s and sony nex5 currently and I'm more than pleased with this combo. I use my nikon for all the "important" and animals shots, while I use my nex whenever I need the IQ and can sacrifice mm - all kinds of travel photography, portraits. As for IQ don't see a difference in files (actually less grain on nex than on d300s). The only con on nex is the pancake lens, which simply doesn't deliver to this what You could expect, but this should change with the nikon to nex adapter (which I should get this week). You will probably hear a lot of stuff about how weird the menu is, etc, etc.. IMHO it's bullshit, written by people who concentrate on cameras rather than images. once You set up Your nex, You can change most of the important settings with Your thumb.

I'd love to get some feedback from those who have some history with Nikon DSLR but have also bought Sony Nex-5 as light weight option.

In what kind of situations you leave your DSLR home and pick-up Sony Nex-5 instead? What is your share of good photos in between Nex-5 vs. DSLR?

Yes! I am considering to buy Sony Nex-5 simply because when I go out or abroad with by toddlers, DSLR is many times a pain to have with me. So, I think that maybe I could take Nex-5 with me, but what concerns me is the picture quality. I am very demanding and that's why I do not use almost at all my cell-phone's 5Mb camera or Olympus PS I have.
