I kind of have the feeling and I kind of don't at the same time. For me it is a little different, I have that feeling with my film cameras. My Nikkormat and my F5. Those are two cameras I will never part with, I can remember using my dad's Nikkormat when I was 5 on family vacations. Film is just a part of my life and memories I don't want to let go. I grew up with it and thats what pictures and photographs were made of. I was the only kid in high school on trips that had a film camera, everyone else had little point and shoot digital cameras. My D60 on the other hand is a good camera and worked for me for the most part, but its just a camera to me, another object. It doesn't hold the same to me as the film cameras. I have no problem trying to sell it off to put some money to a D7000 or "D400".

I have sold old photo equipment to fund my purchase of something newer and better. For me photography is a hobby, not a profession and my budget is too limited not to consider selling old gear.

I sold a Pentax Me Super + 2 lenses to buy a Nikon N75 + 2 lenses.
I sold the N75 + lens + flash to buy a D50 + lens.

Today my D50 + 4 non-VR lenses would be considered obselete by most people who read and post on this site. Yet this very basic consumer DSLR has never let me down, never needed repair, and still works very well. I still like it better than its successors (D40/D40X/D60/D3000). More important, it has been the vehicle for me to learn a lot and become a much better photographer than I was before owning it. With it I shot some photos that I am very proud of and with it I shot quite a few really lousy photos, but they were not that fault of the D50. My skill and creativity, not my gear, has always been my biggest limitation. Not being able to afford the latest and greatest forced me to concentrate on improving my photographic skills and that was a good thing.

But now I have outgrown the D50, had thought of getting the D90, but the D7000 at a price of $1200 (a stretch for me) offers a feature set I thought I'd never be able to afford short of winning the lottery.

Numerous times I have wished I had two bodies, with a different lens on each. I'm probably being sentimental, but I'm going to keep my D50, even after I get the D7000.

warprints said:
In my 46 years of shooting, I have never sold any equipment, although I did trade a Nikon F body for a shotgun about thirty years ago. I still have everything from a Brownie through Instamatic 126, Minolta X-570s, etc, even a Poloroid camera (and one pack of very old "film" for it). Ok, Ok ... my name is warprints and I'm a pack rat. So there. I said it. You happy now? :-)

Rough count in my head -- I have 16 camera bodies.

But do you still have the shotgun? I traded my Cadillac for a microphone once :-)

Hahaha!

Im actually selling my D90, a $500.00 wrist watch, and my old 55-200 kit lens to offset the cost of my new D7000 (which Ive already pre ordered:-)

Not that I needed to, but I figure its not a bad way to keep my hobby costs down. Trading in stuff I like less to get something I really want.

After all is said and done, my D7000 will cost me nothing out of pocket.

But...I hear you on the camera. It all depends on the price. If I couldnt get a good price on my D90, Id just keep it for a back up.

I am trying to sell off my D80 and a lens so I don't have to sell my D90 just yet.

But it's looking like I need to sell off my D90 now and use the D80 until the D7000 comes out.

I love my D90, I wish I could keep it, but I'm draining my savings for the D7000 and I need to put money back into it.

That is precisely what I did two years ago almost to the day when I sold my D80. I was considering the D90, but was never crazy about the video. If it had auto-focus, and could record a clip longer than 5 minutes could have been swayed me, but bought the D300 instead. Some of the first pictures I took with the D300 were of my D80 to post on e-bay. Then used the $700 I received from selling it combined with the money saved for the D90 to pay the credit card bill.

Can't say I was sad to see the D80 go, I liked the camera, but was fine selling it. The D300 on the other-hand has more sentimental value to me mainly because my understanding of camera settings, and photography grew while owning it. I admit, the full idiot mode was a crutch that held me back from understanding all the other goodies.

Guess it depends on how obsolete. I liked my fuji P&S and I sold it. Only 5MP, but it took good pictures. I used the funds for my D5000 so it was going toward what was replacing it. So yeah I sold it. It all depends on what it is and how obsolete I suppose. If it will be used any more then probably not. If I really have no use for it then I would think about it if there was any money to be made. If obsolete and not worth anything then it can just sit and look nice somewhere...or collect dust at least (I don't have to do the dusting at my house ;)

Needs dictate my purchases. Until couple of months ago I was still using my old D70s. then I upgraded to D200. And now I am on preorder for the D7000. Hardly buying it every 6 months.

I don't buy my gear to re-sell it. I buy it and use it! I never understand guys who constantly buy a camera and then six months later they sell it and buy the Next Big Thing. I just laugh when I hear such talk and just keep shooting with my D50 and F3. I heard a rumor that they got replaced too.

If I would be a Rockefeller, I would be sentimental too. I can't afford it now. So I part ways with my old stuff, so somebody else can use it. I would rather give away stuff for symbolic even prices and know that somebody will still use it, rather than let it sit on my shelf and collect dust.

With the new d7k releasement last night brings a Eire feeling of guilt underneath the excitement.

I had the D90 as my first camera and it was a fancy little camera but with this release I knew that I'd have to part ways with it and sell it used while it still holds any value. This camera was the first dslr I bought, and has a personal bonding. My heart says keep it as a memory to look upon in 20 years but my brain says sell to fund the D400/d800 full frame body.

This isn't just about the D90/D7k.. But anyone else have the same feelings about their equipment?
