Guys there are too many threads asking too many of the exact same questions. Please keep the discussions to one specific thread and please avoid asking or discussing the same subject in numerous threads. For example we've got a thread discussing pre orders so we dont need to discuss them here too. There are several "which lens" discussions and of course too many "what should i do" questions. I think we need to start closing more of these repetative threads. I'm closing this thread as its played out for long enough.

I own both DX and FX and find the D300 gets used more than my other cameras. I own lens both for DX and FX, but the size and 1.5 magnification factor often makes me take the D300 over the D700. The D7000 I am getting as it will do better HD video and I think it is going to be a good value. It also is pretty popular so being able to wait for some time will be a good advantage for me. All that said I still rate my D700 as one of the best cameras I have ever owned. The D300 though is very practical. My D90 is fairly nose heavy with many of my lens. Even the 18-200VR feels nose heavy on a D90. Also the D90 video is something to be used with considerable caution in that it is pretty soft and lack of AF is OK at times, the lighting flickers on it pretty bad too.

The D7000 isn't much heavier than the D90. With the battery grip it might be better, but I'm not sure if it'll still be nose heavy in your opinion.

The 18-135 was certainly nose heavy on the D40, but I'm more than used to it now.

I am really use to having a batter grip and would hate to be without one.

am I the only one who doesn't prefer DX format? I mean, in terms of ISO, D7000 just performs well enough in the dark environment (ofcourse, we need to see how it turns out in the real life, but it is an upgrade of D90, which still was the king of low high ISO noise performer.) and has an advantage of 1.5x reach. I really like the advantage of 1.5x.. anyone?

I prefer DX just because I have DX lenses and the fact that I can't afford FX. That's a major factor if you ask me. :D

What was the number you used to call them?

Oddly enough I asked them to call me. I believe through their customer support page on their site you put in your problem and include the number you wish them to call or e-mail address in which you'd like them to e-mail and they'll get back to you. But from what I remember they call instantly. it's a nice set up, no more waiting on the phone :)

Mike,
Maybe you can have a neighbor wait for the package or call the place you bought it from not to require a signature on arrival. Or have the parcel service hang on to the package until you can pick it up. I don't know how a store would handle a pre-order. Some stores ask you to pick it up the day of and if you don't they will sell it to the first customer the next day and return your deposit.

Good luck!

I preordered off Amazon and gave them a call. They haven't charged me yet but they reassured me that the shipments will take place in a First come first serve basis. So hopefully the earlier you preorder the quicker you'll receive the product. But I was told to keep an eye on the account if they cancel the order which apparently has happened in the past.

Hi TaoTeJared and Workodactyl,

Thanks. I scheduled to be in and out of town quite of be from now through Thanksgiving, so it's hard to gauge what to do as far as receiving the camera.

Nonetheless, I'm going to pull the trigger today. I guess the worse thing is they will take it back and restock it if I'm not here - the thing I'm trying to avoid - it will be what it will be.

@gelu88, my nearest Nikon outlet is in Spokane, over 250 miles away. We do have a mini-me Best Buy and Vann's, but they are really like catalog stores; the Best Buy is the smallest BB is the US, a dubious honor. I've always had much luck with Amazon.

FWIW, I did notice in the brochure that it takes the same MC-DC2 Remote Release Cord - good news!

With any luck I'll get mine before Christmas. ;-)

My best to all.

Mike

Hi all,

I have the money in my wallet - well bank - but I'm in/out of town, and I sort of need a specific delivery date.

I'm unclear as to how the preorder process works. Will the camera just appear out of the blue or will a notification be sent that it is coming? Either way, I could be 2 weeks away.

My best,

@Mike G - It doesn't appear that anyone knows as of yet when it will be out. I'm watching the 24-120 f/4 and just in the last week or so, Preferred Pros were notified of "shipping soon." It looks like Nikon wanted to announce everything before last week to be the talk coming into the event. I'm sure that there are allot of for Preferred pros wanting the video which pushes everything back. I'm just guessing but depending where you get if from..3-6 weeks?

we still only have photokina shots to work with, we cant expect more for a couple weeks at least.

But is that really a concern for you? This is perhaps the most important camera since the D3/D300 release. and especially given Nikon's recent track record, why would this camera be anything less than exceptional?

though for me this means IQ marginally better than D300,D90 and 1 stop better ISO. I haven't seen anyone really expect anything more or less.

depends how you preordered.

i did it with a local camera shop, and haven't paid anything up front.

they said they will call me when they get a final release date and may or may not ask for a downpayment.

Online is a little different, you are basically put on a reserved list and when the cameras are in, they ship them out and charge you when they ship (at least thats that amazon does.) you would get the standard email that says "your product has shipped"

It took the D300 about 3 or 4 months to get to "normal" inventory if I recall correctly. The D7000 is going to be in higher demand then the more expensive D300 so "normal" levels might mean February 2011.

Wow! I think you're right. I wasn't able to buy my D90 as a body-only purchase until sometime in January, as I recall. Damnit! It's going to be a long winter!

blckcat said:

Sure, I love having the equivalent of a 270mm f/2.8 with my used AF Nikkor 180mm f/2.8 that I bought for only $400. Especially seeing how much a "real" 300mm f/2.8 costs. But in sketchy lighting, my DX-sensored D90 is pretty noisy to my eyes. I look forward to the day when I can have both a great DX body (D7000), and a great "future" FX body. DX for reach and portability, and FX for lower-noise, increased sensitivity, and greater dynamic range.

poster said:
For me the advantage of getting FX was having access to truly ultra wide lenses.

And that's the rub for me also . . . I can't wait for the day when I can slap my 14mm Nikkor on an FX body, as well as all the rest of my wide-angle FX primes.

I kind of agree with you. Let me explain. For me the ISO performance of D7000 is already beyond my expectations, and I doubt I would need it to be better. I wonder at what point will the ISO war stop. At what point it will get just ridiculous.

For me the advantage of getting FX was having access to truly ultra wide lenses. That being Nikon 14-24mm and that's about it. For now I can't see myself needing an FX camera. That isn't to say that I wouldn't get one if it were sub $2k.
Depends on the type of photography you do, I rarely use telephoto lenses and when I do, the extra reach of DX is irrelevant to me and my circumstances.

I myself am ordering the D7000 when it reaches "normal" inventory situation. I have had it with pre-orders myself. I don't need the camera until somewhat before my next trip to Alaska. My use of the D3100 indicates the video on that is pretty good. I believe the D7000 HD video will be better. I also for sure would not buy the D3100 for a backup camera. I have a D300, aD90 etc., but it will be awhile before the D7000s are really in the pipeline. If the actual stocking of D3100 is any indication we should be in pretty good shape for the D7000. Based on the quality control issue I would test any of these cameras to make sure you don't get a dud.

Somehow cant quite bring myself to pre-order this little beauty. I made the mistake of pre-ordering the D5000 which was going to be a gift for my grandson - but only after a good field testing by me! I always like to do that. Just before the general recall of the D5K this one seized up and I sent it back to the shop for an exchange - and of course because it was selling so well they didn't have one in stock for me. Then I was persuaded by the shop manager telling me he would have it back in my hands within the week. Well, six weeks later, and I was still waiting, and it seems to be lost. 10 weeks later I am offered a refurb in a refurb box which is not what I would have wished for a special present. It got stolen last month in Turkey so the boy has been without a DSLR since that incident. It was insured for 750 bucks and once the claim is processed I think he should put the money towards a D7K - which of course I will have to field test! But I'm thinking what if they are rushing this one out to meet huge anticipated demand and there's bugs in it again - another recall blah blah. I think he should wait until the new year when bugs will surely have been dealt with and price is down 100 bucks! Sounds the right way to go?

That's usually the smart move.

Yes the specs are amazing.

Yes Nikon will level the competitors for a year with the D7k.

But, their history of QC isn't great recently: D5k issues (like you mentioned), 24 1.4 AF issues, 24-70 light leaks (though that's been out awhile, maybe earlier sampling error?), etc.

I'm sure Xmas prices will be geared towards clearing the D300s, D90, and D700 - so wait until Xmas of 2011 for the "reduced" or "packaged" D7k's.

Ugh, half of me wants it to be released at the end of October and the other part of me wants it released ASAP.

The later it's released the less pressure I'll have to sell my gear off to fund it.

Then again, it seems like this will be sold out everywhere, so even if I do come up with the money, I still might not be able to get it.

And if I have to wait longer than a month I am either going to go ahead and get the D300s or get new glass like the 80-200 AF-S + TC or the 70-200VRI.

I really doubt the price will drop by christmas, I certainly hope it will be because then i'll probably buy one hah, but that seems too soon for a price drop considering it possibly isn't even shipping out until literally the very end of October, and that's best case scenario. So taking that into consideration I find it highly unlikely they are going to give it a price cut with it having been released for less than 2 months.

Coming from a D40, this will be a HUGE step up. I'm really excited about everything. The only thing holding me back is the price, which I'm willing to pay, I just have to wait a little longer than some. =)
