I think I already posted something like this here, but for you I will do it again. You can not actually post pictures here, you will have to upload them to some web sites like flickr and then post the link to it as follows:

Back when I updated the firmware of my D70, I downloaded the Windows "version" of the firmware update though I use Mac, as I had not seen the Mac version and assumed there was none (I figured it was worth a try). However, everything went quite well and the camera updated fine. The only difference between the Mac and Windows versions is the instructions. Nikon has a habit of making things confusing.

Yeah, to be honest I was a bit nervous because Nikon had too many scary capital letters. It's easier than the directions say on the actual website.

I'm happy I got it done, but to be honest, the updates are not significant at all, based on the changes that they made on the site.

By the way, how do you post photos? I have time now to put up the dust photos and the museum ones.

Glad you finally done it without a problem, as there should be any ;)

Maybe, but Nikon recommends it and I wouldn't want to risk my camera anyway. It's such a small step.

Honestly, it updated really quickly anyway. Maybe because they weren't too significant anyway.

Update-

Just finished updating it to version 1.12.

It really wasn't that hard, the Nikon website really has too many scary warning signs.

For those of you with D40s who haven't updated, just follow episode 12.

http://www.dtowntv.com/category/episodes/

I had 1.10, so I had to update 1.11A and 1.11B.

So, I downloaded the file, ran it on Windows.

Formatted the card on my camera, put 1.11A on it.

Went to firmware version up.

After it finished, I formatted the card again and repeated it with 1.11B.

Then I did the same for 1.12A, except there's no B version.

Simple.

Thanks for all the previous responses.

And to be honest, it really isn't much of a change, but it's free, so why not?

Edit- And for mb, sorry for a late response, but I meant time lapse as in time lapse. The D60 has a time lapse feature that the D40 doesn't have. I would like it if Nikon would update the D40 with that feature, that's all.

@GilmourD - no reason to upgrade at all
@NSXType-R - Time lapse for firmware update? It takes only a couple of minutes to update firmware if that was your question.

I still haven't updated yet, I've been really busy.

But is it too much to ask for a time lapse photo firmware update? It's one of the easiest ways to get breathtaking shots, since I really like the transition from light to dark and dark to light of sunrises and sunsets.

That's the only difference? I have an EN-EL9, so I guess it's not a big deal for me to upgrade, then.

Not much really:
The following issues has been resolved in A firmware version 1.12.
With firmware Ver. 1.11 and earlier, the number of images that could be captured (battery performance) when an EN-EL9a was used was less than when an EN-EL9 was used. By upgrading A firmware to Ver. 1.12, EN-EL9a performance is maximized so that more images can be captured (battery performance) when an EN-EL9a is used than when an EN-EL9 is used.

Number of shots possible (battery performance) with EN-EL9a (1,080 mAh)

- Single-frame shooting mode: Approximately 510 shots (with testing according to CIPA standards*)

- Continuous shooting mode: Approximately 2,400 shots (with testing according to Nikon standards*)

I would suggest first upgrading to 1.11 (firmware A and B) and then 1.12 firmware A.
Format an SD card in the camera.
Copy downloaded files AD400111.bin (1.11 A firmware), BD400111.bin (1.11 B firmware) and AD400112.bin (1.12 A firmware) INDIVIDUALLY to the top level of the memory card. Copy only ONE file to the card at the time.
After each copy turn the camera off and on again press the "Menu" button, select the SETUP menu and then select "Firmware Ver". Select "Version Up" and follow the cameras on-screen menus. When a message displays that the upgrade is complete, turn the camera off and on again.
Re-format the memory card in the camera after each successful upgrade and copy next SINGLE file in sequence and repeat.

NSX - copy A1.12 on one SD card, and B1.11 on second SD card. Than just perform the upgrade from camera menu for first card and repeat for the second. Just be sure that You don't run out of the battery during the firmware update. Apart from this nothing serious shouldn't happen. If You don't have two SD cards, than firstly copy A1.12, perform the update and than delete it from the card, copy the B1.11 and repeat the steps.

About this firmware update
This download provides software for upgrading D40 A firmware to v1.12. The camera’s B firmware must be Ver. 1.11 to upgrade A firmware to Ver. 1.12. Be aware that proper operation of your D40 is not guaranteed with the combination of A firmware Ver. 1.12 and B firmware Ver. 1.00 or Ver. 1.10.

Okay, I'm a bit nervous about updating firmware on my D40 because I seriously don't want to turn the thing into a brick.

So can anyone help me out? I do know that it is firmware version 1.10, so I think I'm two versions behind.

The weird part is that I know 1.12 does not have a B, but 1.11 has an A and a B.

Before I do anything stupid, can anyone walk me through it?

I know NikonDTown had a short on it, but it was way too short for my purposes.

Thanks guys.

Edit- Add firmware update streamlining to the list of stuff Nikon needs to improve. Why do you need to confuse the crap out of us by offering two versions, both of which are needed to update the camera?

Either keep it simple or keep it consistent. Arguably, if you pull off both I'd be much happier.
