Hello,A younger agent, joins the crew. I must now be occupying ten, perhaps twenty, percent of the security force. At this checkpoint anyway. There are three score more at the other five checkpoints. The new arrival looks at the printouts from x-ray, looks at my laptop sitting small and alone. He tells the others that it is a real laptop, not a "device". That it has a solid-state drive instead of a hard disc. They don't know what he means. He tries again, "Instead of a spinning disc, it keeps everything in flash memory." Still no good. "Like the memory card in a digital camera." He points to the x-ray, "Here. That's what it uses instead of a hard drive."

What happens? My Pentax ME Super II will not work... something with the shutter release. That's also why I shoot Nikon now.

Couldn't have gone that badly if you're still here to talk about it. Not something I'd make a habit of, though. :)

True, but somehow if all I could muster is blurred crooked pictures of the side of a canyon then somehow I think trying to get an eagle gliding above the river wouldn't really work.

On that note I thought of another moment from the National Parks thread when I had my camera, but it was very early point and shoot and I couldn't change the shutter release time. There was an awesome thunderstorm coming over Canyonlands with tons of lightning. Most of the area is red, but the rim of the canyon is white and all down where the river is, is green with vegetation. It would have been a great photo opportunity, but I didn't have the equipment to get the picture.

My problem is usually I am not able to stop. I drive tons for work and I take my camera a good portion of the time, but many times I will be in a hurry or on the highway and can't find somewhere to stop at.

I do have one that stands out in my mind from a while back though. One time while driving back to Denver from college through the mountains is probably the one time that would have been a super picture. I am driving along through a section of road surrounded by steep canyon walls. There was afternoon sun shining from behind me. I look over and gliding right above the Colorado River is a bald eagle that had just about the same pace as me. We were side by side until I came to a turn and lost it. Was a pretty amazing sight.

Don't even get me started.

In fact, I started such a thread a while back ago. :D

But no matter. I got called for jury duty this week, and one of those days while going home, I spotted the classic photo- filtered sun through clouds with a setting sun- over Manhattan nonetheless!

Usually I at least bring my stupid point and shoot. But unfortunately for jury duty, you need to check in your gear- cameras and phones. No way am I bringing a DSLR, and no way was I bringing my cheapo point and shoot either.

Suffice to say, I am quite mad at the Justice Department right now.

HF: Too bad you can't photograph imagination. What you describe is so vivid I can picture it pretty clearly.

I'll give you two: one was missed because I didn't have my camera with me, and the other was missed because of the camera.

I've missed more shots than I'd care to admit, but the one that stands out was one morning near one of the cemeteries that I frequent (I like shooting in graveyards). It was early, a bit foggy and overcast, and the sun was just starting to peek through the clouds in places. I can't do the overall scene justice, but even with my limited skills I could've gotten some great pictures out of that! I don't forget my camera that often, but I kicked myself a bit harder than usual for that one.

The one I blame on the camera: Last year, my wife and I were on our honeymoon in Puerto Rico. On the road to Ponce, passing the town of Yauco, there's a hill or mountain off in the distance, and the mountainside had a few dozen houses painted in the most dazzling colors. We passed a few times on our way to various places, but the best vantage point was from the road, and my camera (a Kodak p&s) had neither the zoom range nor the shutter speed to pull it off. I know, because I tried a few times. The most frustrating, though, had to have been one evening close to sunset, when the lighting was catching the houses JUST right... Well, it's incentive to go back.

The one missed photo I remember, among many, happened while returning from David Harvey's class at the Maine Photographic Workshops. My wife and mother-in-law traveled with me and yes it was a worthwhilw trip! I started driving up a hill in a small town and noticed a huge flag stretched across the street and as I tried to stop to photograph it some objections issued forth from my traveling companions. I gave in and as I started up the hill a motorcyclist came over the horizon right under the flag of course. It was a huge bike and he was even bigger. The photo, as I remember it, if I had captured it, was magnificent and I still shed a tear when ever I think of it. Oh yes I'm still married to my wife and my mother-in-law has passed away but is still a beloved person to me.

Ohh wow that was a great one. I can see it now.

No reason to give up on it. Recreate the scene, and shoot it. In fact lighting wise, it's a pretty easy thing to recreate. You just have to get the timing right.

Yup this is where we can talk about the one that got away ..

Let me start..

Not actually today but one day it was raining and as I slowly inched over a hill in the traffic jam in the early twilight at the beginning of a sunset. A figure was waiting to cross the road under an umbrella as I turned to look at the figure a beam of light from a passing car shone across the face of a lovely lady with red lipstick under the umbrella. It looked like a black and white photo with selective colouring of the red lips and face with warm colours form the headlight of the car with rain drops angling across the front of the image. with a nice sunset background over a cityscape.

Oh well.. even if I had a camera I wont be able to react fast enough to capture that image..
