Yeah, is Nikon trying to make us all poor?

First the $2200 24 1.4. . . .a 85 1.2 VR would BEAT that, probably $2750!!

I have just spent the last two weeks shooting in the field with a lot of Nikon and Canon Pros. My results with a Nikon DSLR DX camera and a Nikkor 70-300VR lens had a lot of FX camera users wondering if their huge lens were all that competitive. My D700 was also getting great results but the need for lighter FX equivalent to the DX 70-300VR standout lens to me is very obvious. Some of the best other results I saw and that was agreed upon by the photo pros was the Nikon D300s which with 70-300VR or 200-400 Nikkor was very good. My 18-200VR really can produce results on video using the Nikon rolling shutter. Nikon needs to upgrade their video as in todays world video on DSLR has its place. On my D700 I longed for video many times. I would NOT buy a 18-200 FX 2.8. For field use where you want a beautiful scene to have some depth of field a 2.8 lens too me is TOO BIG< TOO EXPENSIVE AND CAN NOT GET OUT OF IT"S OWN WAY!!!!

I wonder how many elements it would take to complete a FX 18-200mm? Weight is the most important factor for me now when I buy a lens. My 14-24 and 24-70 are killers and I got rid of my 70-200mm. The year is half over now, but all kinds of rumors on the internet still saying Nikon will be busy this year with new lenses to be released. I'm pretty happy with what I have at the moment and would be more interested with any body releases..

NSXType-R said:
I hope you're just joking, a 28-200 f/2.8 would be incredibly heavy and expensive. Just add the 24-70 and 70-200.

I wonder if the 24-120 f/4 is relatively light, I wouldn't mind picking it up if the price was relatively reasonable, maybe $800 or so.

I'm not joking and it probably wouldn't weigh much more than the 70-200mm f2.8. The 70-200mm is 21 elements in 15 groups while the 28-200mm f2.8 patent is only 16 elements in 7 groups. Plus weight doesn't seem like a huge issue for many as they are willing to lug around a 200mm, 300mm, 400mm or a zoom in those ranges. Im not asking for the 600mm f2.8 they patented!

Admit it, if weight and price weren't an option most nikon shooters would prefer it over the 24-70mm and 70-200mm combo. I shoot with a similar combo (28-70mm and 80-200mm f2.8's) and find it a little cumbersome at times as there is always an extra lens to lug around and sometimes it just takes too long to change lenses in order to get a shot. I'm also pretty sure my 300mm f2.8 would weigh more than it.

With that mentality the first 18-200mm would have never been made. I started when people thought the 35-200mm f/3.5~f/4.5s was the largest zoom possible and now tamron has an 18-270 on the market...

The patent is here...

Yes I thought an 18-200mm for FX would be impossible to make as well, but if they did it the cost would be crazy like well over $2000 grand. The 24-120mm I heard was going to stay the same but make it with Nano Cystal and improve the optics.

While the 18-200 sounds like it will be a great seller why would Nikon make a 24-120mm f4? Their 24-120mm f3.5-5.6 wasn't that good. Although it is probably going on the market soon, I would much rather see the 28-200 f2.8 go into production and it would be a better lens. Camera companies rely too much on Iso capabilities now and are shying away from fast zooms, and refuse to produce a fast superzoom. I doubt it would cost much more to produce one and pro's would love having their 24-70mm and 70-200mm in one lens... I like the lineup list except for the 24-120mm ...

I think Nikon needs to focus less on making lenses that compete with Canon and more time pushing the market ahead. When they added video to a DSLR it was a industry changer. What they should be worrying about is the upcoming markets of Sony (I've already met 2 pros who switched from nikon D3's to sony a900's), Panasonic, and Olympus, not the competitor who's golden days are behind it...

Exciting NR blog today, NR Admin! Great work, and thank you! Interesting that an 80-400mm, 100-500mm, or whatever long zoom was rumored, didn't make the list. Although I'm excited about the AF-S 85mm f/1.4 (hopefully, VR-ized), I think I'm still yearning for a slightly longer portrait lens, and will probably drop some cash for that same ole' DC-Nikkor 105mm I've been longing for, once all the Photokina dust has settled.

18-200mm on FX sounds... infeasible. I would guess it's probably really a 28-300 (the FX equivalent to the 18-200 DX). Otherwise, I know what the front element on my dad's 18mm f/4 looks like, and I don't know how an even more bulbous element is going to accommodate 200mm.

Also, kyoshi, how much are you willing to pay for your dream 28-200 f/2.8? I don't see a lens like that selling for less than $3000 or so.

The nikon rumors page has some great news on potential lenses coming perhaps at photokina this year. Some of the interesting ones that got my attention were the upgrade on the 24-120 and an 18-200 for FX! The 85mm 1.4 N I already figured would be released. It also mentions a new 35mm in 2011.

No more hints on any bodies except the D3100 already mentioned on here. Looks like Nikon is changing its monster zooms for FX finally! Too late for me I think I just got a 24-70 a couple of weeks ago. Watch Nikon refresh it with VR :(
