You can even get a Vivitar 285. They go for $85 on Ebay all day long. The power is very close to a SB900. The photo below I took with only using 3 285's.

just a suggestion, you don't need sb600 to learn flash, unless you want to shoot in eTTL.There are good alternatives on the cheap side. Check out LumoPro or one of those ebay ones, Youngunovo(sp?) something. Manual flash is easy peazy.

So you are "I only shoot available light" type of a guy. It would serve you well to learn flash, it's not THAT hard, and results can be miles better than "available light" pics.

Nah I just don't have a flash yet and haven't really had a need for one. I will eventually get one, but I am still trying to build up the lens inventory to where I want it. I would struggle to decide between the $200 35mm f1.8 and a SB600.

I actually got to play around with my friends SB600 and SB800 flashes while he was here. It was neat to have them, but I don't think I would get much use out of them. I am hoping that a new faster lens will help inside in situations where I would really rarely take pictures anyway.

I agree, the SB600 is a wonderful flash. The only drawback for me is that if you want to use pocket wizards, or some other sort of radio trigger, then you have to use a hotshoe adaptor. Not a huge issue, but I prefer the flash to have a pc port.

The Sb-600 has been awsome for me. I guess if it was updated I would have a look. A new update will make the already great but old SB-600 very affordable for anyone who wants a great reliable flash. New releases are always twofold, you get a great new Nikon product and the old product usually good already, drops in price often quite steeply. Example, the old 18-200mm VR 1, I was very happy with the 70-200mm VR 1 and the 50mm 1.4 D. You could go on with many other products I'm sure.

You know it never occurred to me that Nikon also had separate lines of flashes.

I always thought the SB800 was the successor of the SB600.

I rarely use my flash, which I should probably change but ehhh.

I'm sure when it comes out I'll be excited over new gear to obtain.

Nikon fanbois often pee and poop themselves after hearing a new rumor or announcement :^)

The SB600 has been around for over six years now so people have been waiting for an update. The SB800 was replaced by the SB900 which has a better menu and control layout. These improvements have been expected on the SB600 replacement (SB700?) for many years now. The first rumors of an SB600 being replaced "soon" started about two years ago!

Again, I am new so please forgive my ignorance.

This is kinda bad, cause I'm also saving up for a 105mm 2.8. Crap, which one should I get?

I'm still leaning towards the lens.
