I feel like that about the D300. If I were able to buy a D300 or D300s, I would buy the D300 even if there was little difference in price. When something is right, it's right. Same applies for the D700 for me.

I have to disagree with You Niko, indeed d700 is a nice camera, I think it's gonna end up the same way as d90 and the price drop will be visible. Look at the d3 market right now, the price drop is up to 50% since the introduction of d3s, and still it's a hard selling item on a second market (at least in my place). OTOH, look at the d90 market - the used ones sell for app. 70% value of the new ones, and this ain't gonna move much more (maybe another 20-30% off, not more than that)

Seriously,I would be proud to own a D700, but shooting what I do,the cropped sensor works best for me...oh and I sold my EM to get an FE...but I kept my D60 when I got the D90;>)

Yup, the "non-legendary" D90 will drop in price on the used market faster than the D700 will once their replacements are announced. Especially if Nikon doesn't make an "affordable" full frame anytime soon. The D700 will maintain a higher price thus if you buy one now it'll depreciate less than a D90.

But if it makes you feel better I've replaced FE with FG in my previous example.

I'm still happy with my non-legendary D90...a little more happy in fact than I was with my non-legendary FE...of course I'm using the FE for a hatrack at the moment.

I have a long wait....what I'm holding out for is a D400...plenty of time to save the bucks!

??? We are talking about what's coming "soon" and how that relates to Nikon's current line up. How's that getting off track? We aren't talking about what's the best lens for wildlife or what will Apple do about the iphone4's crappy reception.

I'd be happy with buying a D700 now versus a D90 even though I know they will be replaced "very soon". The D700 is going to be one of those legendary Nikon cameras that people will still want years after they stop making it. Just like the F3, F4, FM2 etc. The D90, while a good camera, will fade like the D70 and D40 and will eventually become just a "garage sale" item like the EM and the FG, N8008, N90 etc. Good Nikon cameras but not "legendary" top dollar gear.

PB PM is exactly right about the D700 replacement, whatever it is it will be overpriced for what was added for about two years. The D700 could be one of the most perfect cameras out there. I shoot with D300 and D90 a lot as field cameras. Both are very good. Since I have FX Nikkors too the D700 would be nice if I could use it in the field and for me to not feel I was taking too great a chance of damaging it. Despite my use of video on Nikon DSLRs I do not need all of my Nikons to have it. Therefore waiting for a D700 replacement means you also have to accept that it will be worth quite a premium. Highlandah and other forum members have commented about saving money until the "new one" is introduced.....US buyers do not save much money!! We spend it!!

All good and valid arguments. But I would get really sick in the stomach if they annouce the new model right after. Mind you, I can still hold out a little longer, still got some patience left. And of course I expect the new model to be more expensive, I'm not that dillusional to think otherwise, LOL.

If I got a new camera today it would be the D700, 1) It is cheaper than the replacement will be until it is 2 years old, 2) I don't need video for what I do, it would just be a bonus if the camera I bought did.

Would be nice if they announced the D700 sucessor. I'm on the fence of just buying the current model now; but knowing my luck, the new model would be announced an hour later. A little more real estate in MP would be appreciated, more than extreme ISO settings for sure (not every one is shooting sporting events in unlit caves at midnight in available light).

I can't wait for the replacement for the replacement for the D5000 and it is really spoiling my enjoyment of the D5000 I have now... ;-)

Seriously, I should have bought the D90, but the D5000 will always be a better camera than I am a photographer so I should just shut up and use it and forget the niggling differences.

@ Graphicnatured: I think the D300 and D700 are fabulous cameras - indeed perfect in my mind. If I had the money, I'd buy a low shutter count D300 as a keeper.

I really want the D700 replacement, but am glad I have a D300. There were times where I was impatient, but I feel I'm turning the corner, and it seems to be just in time since it will most likely still be a while before I will get me hands on my upgrade.

highlandah the D300 was upgraded with the D300s did you mean the a refresh? I wasn't impressed with the D300s refresh either they just added video! If they do that to the D700 update I will not be a happy camper..

That would explain why my D300 is slowing down, it is trying to tell me in a series of 0 and 1s that I need a D300s... lol

What? Haven't you heard PB? When Nikon announce the replacement for the D90, all the old D90's just stop working!

People have trouble saving money in this "I need it now" society, but if you have been able to wait this long, then I'm sure you'll be able to hold off a few more months. Honestly, if you need a camera that bad now, just pull the trigger and move on with your life.

How is that proportional? lol In fact it may be quite the opposite, the longer I wait i risk the money I have saved to spend it on something else...xD
