I totally agree, Willis. I have a buddy who is all Sony all the time and I just can't fathom why.

Shade: specs aren't eveything, though. I also got Nikon gear for reasons like Rob's, but I don't think Canon's UI (or generally their AF, metering, and flash control) is as good as Nikon's, and that can make a big difference.

I don't think I'll ever forgive sony for the whole DRM Music debacle a few years back. Even putting that incident aside, you'd be hard pressed to find a more anti-consumer company than Sony in all of Japan. Its a shame to, as they had some promising technology over the last several decades.

I own Nikon gear, because I already owned Nikon gear. It would be stupid to sell all my gear just because Canon has better stuff, right now. I'd be buying new cameras every 6 months from different manufactures with that kind of logic.

Sony has a price premium based on name, not because their stuff is better than the competition. It has nothing to do with newer products with newer technology, which is the current difference between Canon and Nikon.

PB PM said:
I associate Sony with people that are mindless drones, who buy their products based on name alone, regardless of the fact that most of what they sell is overpriced crap. If I go to the store and look at my options, a Panasonic and Sony with the same specs, 9 times out of 10 the Sony will have $100 or more premium just for the name.

I also don't like Sony because their DSLRs are poorly designed and the menu system is abysmal, IMO. Oh and I hate Playstation...

I can't say either way about the quality of Sony products, as I have almost none, but if you are just going to compare specs alone, Nikon is seriously overpriced compared to Canon. How are you being less mindless?

I don't want Nikon to do anything, I think they are doing just fine on their own. 35-40% of the DSLR market is nothing to laugh at.

read my first post, as to who would be in charge of body design

Anyway, Nikon gets sensors from Sony anyway right. The merger would only work if Sony realizes who should to what to make the best possible product. A merger is about making the best possible DSLR line from the strength of both companies, not to make a Nikon DSLR designed by Sony.

You all (most of you) want Nikon to become many things, incl making their own senors etc, but I'm not sure that Nikon can actual live up to all of our wants alone

Sony is at least 4 times the size of Nikon. It wouldn't be merger, more like "You will be assimilated!"

My sense of Nikon is they're still an old fashion engineering driven company. By and large, products come out when the engineers think they're ready. Much to the annoyance of marketing and fanboys. Sony is marketing driven. That a culture clash that Nikon wouldn't survive.

Will we ever hear the story behind that? This thread seems as good as any for it.

Actually to dominate the DSLR market Nikon should merge with Sony:

Nikon would be in charge of:

Camera body design and layout, but maybe with some ideas from Sony
Menu setup
Final sensor design

Sony:

Sensor manufacturing
Video mode, incl the future Camcorder model
Adding connectivity, bluetooth, GPS, WIFI etc

They could continue making both Nikon and Minolta mounts incl that new E mount (incl a Nikon F adapter) Depending on future sales then maybe stop making the Minolta mount

What do you think

Pete
