Reed, Like I said in the post above yours, if you have the 15-55mm kit lens, that is all you need as a minimum. The logical addition would be the 55-200mm but you don't really need that for portraits.

If you have the 18-55 it should be enough and the 18-105 although probably better is not really worth it unless you trade in your 18-55 as both lenses does much the same thing. What do you find lacking in your 18-55? It sounds like you would like more reach for candid shots. if thats the case the 18-105 is great value. If you want better sharpness and better build then go for the 16-85. the 18-200 is really nice but the IQ is probably not as good as the 18-55 but you get a great range and good enough IQ for candids and if you know what you are doing you can get quite good IQ from it.

PS your 18-55 is a nikkor right?

reed said:
i still confused right now. should i buy 18-105mm(i already have 18-55mm) or should i buy other lense (within the budget) any suggestion? i more prefere on wide and candid. the wedding is only for my brother..

It depends on the amount of reach and what you want to do. Do you really need the long end? Do you mind carrying more than one lens? Do you need speed and performance? Will you need to use your camera to make a living?

The 18-105 is cheaper than the 18-200, probably not by a lot though.

If you already have the D5000 body only, an 18-105mm would be a good general purpose lens for weddings and candids. If you bought it with a kit lens and it is the 18-55mm, you're good to go. With either of those you save a lot of money over the 18-200 too.

Don't forget the 18-55mm gives the apparent focal length of a 27-80 on full frame so is good for portraits at the long end. The 18-105mm would allow a greater working distance for portraits without compressing your perspective too much at the long end.

You prolly want to go with the Nikon 55-200 VR. Save your money for the Nikon 18-200mm VRII, which is the best 18-200 out there. The sigma has a high failure rate and sad sharpness at certain focal's and f/stops.

I would go with sigma but it's still a horrible choice for a lens.
