I see where you are going Niko. I was just curious if there was a way to see why something was refurbished or if you had a problem with a product you bought used if you could see if it had ever been repaired for something. I guess even if you currently possessed the product there isn't much way to prove you really have it without taking it in directly to Nikon.

I think it comes down to a privacy issue. For example some of you have posted serial numbers of your equipment to this forum or photos of your gear with the S/N visible. So if Nikon offered such a service then anyone could get private info about you and your gear. Even if they don't give out names and addresses it still might be in conflict with privacy laws in some places. So in order to avoid liability, Nikon wouldn't offer such a service.

I don't know, but would think that they could make a couple of bucks by offering advice on whether the camera has been repaired (and the extent of the repair) or stolen like the vehicle licensing in England do for cars that have been previously written off or stolen.

You could text the serial number and they would charge $5 + call to give the info.

Here's half an answer: Nikon records the serial number of equipment that it repairs in its computer system. The only questions are whether it keeps that information in its system after the repair is completed and delivered back to the customer (probably "yes") and whether they will give it to third-parties. Nikon's repair number is 1-800-645-6678 (open 8am EST to 2am EST 7 days a week). Maybe you want to ask if you can get the info for a particular piece of equipment before you buy it. As to other repair shops: Sorry, no idea.

Does anyone know if there is a way to track or see if a piece of Nikon equipment has been repaired or refurbished or anything? I was just curious if it was tracked or anything by their serial number or something.
