Look at the following (what I do when I quote out):
1. Cost to travel (gas, miles on car at .55 per mile, tolls, etc.); lodging; food; incidentals.
2. Your going rate (hourly, $50-125/hr, whatever your rate is).
3. Estimate total hours; add to cost to travel for ALL 200 sites.

They won't pay you that, as I suspect it would amount to nearly 6 figures if all these locations are international.

Good luck!

rusty - first off all count all costs: fuel, lodging, food, tickets, etc. add app 10-15% to it (for some unexpected costs, this will always happen). also the deadline is quite short - it will give You more than two places per day, so unless they are nearby I would charge for the deadline additionally - You need to be very well organized to be able to take good snaps (especially sunset/sunrise snaps).

Sounds like they are going to take advantage of you. Not a lot of time to go and photograph 200 locations! You do all the traveling and you use all your equipment and they pay you what they would pay a "soccer mom" with a d40. Make sure you get them to understand that you ARE NOT giving them the photo rights. Get everything in writing .

Hi Rusty

Like in the direct email to you

You simply have to get paid for your time spend doing this, incl the cost of doing business, the only option would be to make the job smaller. So I would study a map of the area and get a rough idea how long it would take incl travel cost etc

Anyway it does look like it could be fun, but don't let that factor influence you to give it away

Pete

Thanks for that, it does sound like fun, I could deliver them a flash or dreamweaver package but that will blow me out work wise, way way too much.

Your advice is sound, I will take it into consideration.

Rusty, I would start with a long hard look at your costs to do the job. Sound like there's some travel/fuel costs, and maybe some lodging. That's assuming you have all the equipment, software, etc. to do the job. Then figure your hours. Even it's just a number for your books. Also - if the site is to go up on 9/1 - that's not a lot of time for shooting 200 sites. It's a big job. Make it clear to the client what you're delivering and when. That's really what they're paying for, the person willing to do it for "free" may have some trouble committing to a real time table for getting the job done. Know the client - do they actually have a budget for the project? Is the web developer getting paid? Does the web developer suck? If so, run away. Or find a web developer to partner with and deliver a complete package. Good luck - it sounds like tremendous fun.

Congrats .. Thats a good problem to have.. :-) Cant help you much .. sorry..

Check out ALARMY, Register as a buyer and see what they charge for a similar set of pictures... for a similar sized website.

I am sure someone will come along with some suggestions... just don't sell yourself short.

Sounds like a real fun project!

Is there a time frame to get the task complete? How many sites can you complete in a day? It sounds like its at least a 6 month job and probably a year or 2 worth.

PS I wouldnt put a RAW email like that on the Internet.. You will be getting SPAM by the TON soon.. Hope a MOD comes along and fix that for you!

This post may not have a place here, so I'm inviting those that have experience in this field to contact me

g a v i n k d at y a h o o dot c o m

I have been offered an opportunity to photograph for a tourism website which will go online on 1st September. The requirement is to photograph approximately 200 tourist sites with different combinations of shots, panoramic, night, sunrises/sets etc.

The shooting order will be left up to me, most of the shots are to be taken in a different city to where I live (1 1/2 hours travel) PP is to be my baby.

I have never tackled such an assignment before, it's easy to put a price on a wedding, portrait or similar, which is limited to a number of hours.

I'm thinking along the lines of a retainer and costs with a per photo used extra. I do not wish to sell the rights to the pictures but allow their use. The other thing to consider, is that if the site is successful, and I think it will be, my work will be viewed by thousands of people.

This is very good exposure and I believe is an opportunity that some have offered to do for free but the developers liked my portfolio better.

I cannot afford to work for free.

All help and advice will be gladly accepted.
