500MB/s is not something to wink at, considering that is faster than any memory card on the market today. :-p Don't take things so personally Niko.

The POINT IS that they have achieved these speeds and are working on this new technology. No it's not going to show up in the D90 or D700 replacements but perhaps future Nikons like the D4H or D5. And oh my god how dare I round 9.5 to 10! Let me delete this whole thread then because .5 is not relevant, jeez!

Sounds like they have a ways to go before it hits the market though, from the article, and top write speed was actually 9.5GB/s not 10GB/s. There is no mention of read speed, which is the real issue in transferring data from point to point. Yes, they can make the memory that fast, but there is currently no connector able to take full advantage of that speed, which is the point you seem to have ignored.

Yes PB PM I'm well aware of how a computer works. What I meant is that you are thinking in terms of existing tech. This break through proves these speeds are possible. It's already been done. Nikon can make their own interface that could handle the speed and not rely on current links. Click the link on my original post to see how they were able to achieve 10gb per second on NAND storage.

NikoDoby said:
A camera's buffer is more like RAM. I'm talking about having an internal hard drive (SSD-solid state drive) to store your images to instead of writing to a CF or SD card. As you point out writing to the memory card is where the "bottleneck" happens. Nikon wouldn't have to use a "typical" SATA connection because your thinking in terms of how a computer works.

I know cameras don't use SATA connections, but the point is that there has to be room on the circuit board for such a connection. It would require multiple pipelines. I hate to break it to you, but a digital camera is a computer, using cellphone/MP3 player like technology due to size restrictions. Due to that factor, like smart phones, cameras will lag behind in terms of speed and processing capability. In this case, it will likely be the limiting factor in write speed and the ability of the cameras processor to process the data before it gets to the card.

Wow I wonder how fast my Computer would be if I had a couple of 10GBs 250 GB SSD in RAID 0

Pete

Nah, my current motherboard does not support raid 0, but just one then, that should still speed things up a bit

Internal flash (Solid State) memory is what the buffer is already. The question is, how the buffer system works, and what is used to transfer information between the buffer and the SD or CF card, which may also be a limiting factor. For example, look at a SATA connector cable, its not really that small and SATA3 transfers less than 10GBs per second (SATA3 is rated at 6GB/s). Considering that most modern cameras don't even push the ability of modern UDMA cards (just over a hundred MB/s), we have a way to go before a 10GB/s interface is an option.

Unless there is internal flash memory in future models! My ipad has it so why not my Nikon D4? That would be sweet! Wirelessly transfer photos or just hook it up to a "real computer" via USB 3 or whatever :^)

FPS is limited by a combination of the mirror build quality and data rate. This type of memory may be used in CF cards, but would be be used in the camera buffer? If not, the speed increase in the CF card might not help much.

1080p at 200FPS... YAHOOO!!!!

That could be fun too, you just turn down the 2160p resolution and increase the fps

A Japanese research group which apparently includes Nikon engineers have developed a new flash memory capable of Warp 9.5! So why would Nikon be interested in this? Hmmm I wonder what 10Gb per second speed would be useful for...
