Right—it's not just for astronomy: okay, VRIII, how about Michael Schumacher's reference frame? Viola! Another perfect F1 pan! Hypothetical question, though: could it work on curves where his reference frame isn't inertial? ;-)

Thanks for the link, AP. Reading that almost makes me want to switch to Nikon just to buy nano crystal-coated lenses...then I remember I'm already a Nikon user. Well, it makes me want to buy one, anyway.

Hahaha! Love that post. It's the VRIII (with selectable inertial frame).

Great shot, AP. I'm also amazed at the lack of ghosting. Does the 300 VR have nanocoating? Does anyone want to explain to me in general terms how they make antireflection coatings that do well over the entire visible spectrum?

How about if the inventors describe it:

Yes, a motorized mount. In fact, piggy backed on a Celestron telescope and an autoguider, which gave sub-pixel tracking. This was one 4 minute exposure of a total of 8 that were stacked for the finale. But I'm amazed that the corner is so sharp. I've seen aberrations on other lenses like my 50mm AFS and Zeiss 85mm f1.4. But with the 300 there's no reason to stop down. I don't think it can get sharper of my D300. The AA filter looks like the limiter.

nice. must have been a motorized mount - no star trails. (No comets or meteors, either!)

Thought I'd share this. Below is a 100% section of the lower left corner of a four minute exposure @ f2.8. Even wide open the stars are still dots, no coma. I thought that's impressive.

The full shot can be seen hear:
