I say get a D40 while you still can. That's what I'm doing.

mostly it's not the body but the glass You mount in front of it - d40, d60, d80 and d200 will have pretty the same high iso performance as all of them have almost the same sensors
d5000, d90, d300 have better high iso performance, as they have CMOS sensor

Does the D60 really have better ISO performance than the D40? I always found my D40 to be on par with my D80 in the noise department (Clean up to 400 usable @800). Of course just matching the D40's performance at 10 MP's is an improvement I suppose.

Personally, the only suitable upgrades to the D40 for me would be the D90 or D200 (depending on why I was shooting). Your results will very.

I remember when I got my D40 too. I was surprised at how small it was, even though it was my first DSLR. I'm still happy with what it puts out.

I remember when D40 came. I loved this little thing, small and light so you could easily put one inside a small belt bag, easy to use and it actually made great pictures. I was impressed and got one right away.
After a while D40x came out, it was not much improvement over D40 but had better resolution so it was OK, not enough though to replace my D40.
Then came announcement about brave new D60, We were all excited and expecting something really revolutionary new and when it came out we were all disappointed, it seamed as nothing more than just a rebranded D40x. We all heated it.
But after a year or so I decided to try one, and was pleasantly surprised, It was actually much better then D40. It has better resolution, ISO and noise performance is better, JPEG images are really great thanks to a new processor and software (and if you are a beginner and don’t want to spend hours on a computer this is important), it is as small and beautiful as D40 but has couple of new (not revolutionary but evolutionary) features that are really useful, it comes with new 18-55 VR lens that is also very good for the price and we should not forget dust reduction system.
So I think this camera is unjustly being neglected and it is actually very good for the price (I would get a kit with 55-200VR included for not much more actually) and it is ideal as a first DSLR.

I have one in really good condition I am selling, I tried posting in the appropriate forum but it would not let me kept getting an error not sure if it was because I tried to attach pictures it seems everyone is having issues embedding pictures. Will try again in a few min

I think that the d60 is a good entry-level camera. Or, as in my case, entry from film to digital.

The D5000 is meant to replace the D60. I agree with nau - the D40x would be a better starting point, then when you've mastered the d40x you can decide if you want to step up to a more expensive camera. I'm quite sure you will be impressed with the D40x as much as a D60's quality (especially compared with pocket digitals). If you buy a D60, you won't be disappointed, because is a good camera!

i think that d5000 is so expensive for me.is it ok to choose the d60 for a beginner like me?d60 is cheaper than the d5000 right?
