The only addition to the D700 I want is 8fps w/ no grip attached..

This! Of course that would require a new battery would it not? I don't think the EN-EL3e has enough voltage to provide the power required.

I doubt we will see the D3X sensor in a D700. For one even Sony is discontinuing the a900 with the "same" 24mp sensor found in the D3X. That leaves only the D3X ($7000USD) and the a850 ($2000USD). Sony is moving on to newer and faster sensors.

The current sensor in the D700 is a Nikon "original" design, not a Sony. Nikon will give the next D700 more megapixels but it won't be the same 24mp sensor from the D3X. Besides I believe Sony has already said that their current generation of sensors are not fast enough to handle HD video.

There has been talk of two Nikon prototypes floating around. One with 16mp and the other with 18mp. So where those sensors end up is a mystery. Also a D3XS is supposedly in the works too. So whatever replaces the Sony a900 that might become the "same" sensor on a future D3XS.

@shivaswrath

I hear you - but not quite sure what you're expecting to be upgraded in the D700? It's only missing two things - video and more megapixels - most folks would be ticked off to loose ANY high ISO performance for a few more mpix... or even a lot more mpix. Just what does the D700 lack that you need?

This way you get a choice in a "small" body - high ISO or high mpix - just like the D3s/x.

Yeah, we may see the 12+/24+ thing for a while. It's a good trade off for a lot of people.

oh lord, when I saw that rumor, I my heart sunk.

And I know JonnyA's heart sunk too - I think he and I are probably one of many D90 owners waiting to get into FF and waiting on the D700 replacement.

I think this would be a good sign though for those of us on the fence.

Could mean the D700 will remain the only FX with a 12mpx as they update the D3s->D4 and D300->D400 to larger sensors?

They could keep the 12mpx FX line going in that body, and like someone said above, introduce a D900 with the 24mpx sensor.

In the past, Nikon has sold the D200 with a 10mpx sensor alongside the D2/D2x/s variant, so potentially, the D700 could become a D200 type sensor and be used for awhile. . .(hell it found it's way into the D80/D40x/D60/D3000). . . .

I don't think you will find a lot of downward price pressure on New stock of the D700, there simply is not a lot of extra stock laying around

Pete

Oh, I know know I'm never going to get a shiny new one for "cheap," but in a year or so a D900 and D700s will knock a hundred or two off the price for good used, and maybe a "refurb" will pop up here or there in NYC a little sooner... someone I know who "has to have" the new one with video or more mpix will sell "old reliable" - it happens. To be a bottom feeder like me you have to be very patient... and have a little ready cash when the opportunity presents itself. I'll make plenty of photos with the D300 and D90 in the meantime. Other people's NAS is a great thing for me...

I'm Still waiting on my D3s after having spent just over £2k on rental(gets taken off final price) So while I was waiting I sold off one d300 to soften the blow of buying a d700 and you know what? I wish I hadnt bothered with the whole d3s nonsense and just bought 2 d700's and just sold off both my d300's. The D3s isnt better till you get to above 6400 iso and to me thats not a big deal.
But hey I got sucked into the whole its a newer better model and went a bit NAS. My clients cant tell the difference they just think wow. So before we go all mental about gods its such an old camera surerly we should remind ourselves what an absolute cracker of a camera the d700 is. The 5d mark2 is bloody awful compared to it , and before you go all megapixel blah blah try the damn plastic pig of a camera for yourself.

Have printed A0 prints no trouble from the so called small 12 megapix and they look as good to me as anything from canon.
My message is just buy the best you can afford and go out and shoot stuff. ITS JUST A TOOL. Dont be a fool the d700 is great , having been dx before with d300 and d2x's its in a different world. 6400 iso is like 600iso on the d2x and 1600 iso on the d300.

And no matter what anyone tells you newer is not always that much better and for alot less than the D3s the d700 delivers. Ok rant over lol

I'm not particularly interested in the high-res small body, but I would be interested in something, anything that would exert just a little downward pressure on D700 prices...

I just can't justify FX at work, so I'd be spending my own $....

I would like to see a D900 instead of a D700s. In camera video doesn't do anything for me, and I'd prefer that efforts went into a serious improvement, not just what for me is fluff.

Maybe this is going to be one of those "sidestep" upgrades. In other words, no direct D700 replacement, but a new, high resolution sensor in a D700 size body. Probably the new Sony high-res w/ video and live view. D700s to come a little later (and not much fanfare) with D3s sensor.

Sorry, this was obvious probably to everyone but me.
