Wrong thread jonny. This is for "camcorders". You want to talk about your adapters over in the NEX3/5 discussion

http://nikonrumors.com/forum/topic.php?id=2073&page=3#post-35525

That adapter you're getting is still manual isn't it? In my previous statement I meant an electronic adapter which allows you to set the aperture via the camera. The rayqual adapters still require you to set the aperture via a "lever" on the adapter. Unless I'm mistaken with what you ordered?

You know you're beating a dead horse when you've got three comments in a row.

Well, at the risk of beating a dead horse, I just wanted to post one of my favorite shots here in one of the NEX threads. I'm pretty sure I put it in the photo-a-day thread last month. Click on it for full size (and I mean full size—all 14 MP). Composition is not optimal as this was taken the first day I was using it and didn't have the focus modes figured out yet.

My F-mount adapter shipped today from Japan. Can't wait to try video with my new Tokina 11-16 2.8.

BTW, this NEX is going to be more expensive than I originally thought (aren't they always?). I can burn the AVCHD movie files directly to DVDs and play them in 1080i on a Blu-ray player and the disc doubles as an optical backup copy of the videos. The only trouble is I don't have a Blu-ray player. And the reason I don't have a Blu-ray player is I don't have an HDTV.

Looks like it's going to be a busy black Friday for me. ;-)

I've got one of the rayqual adapters on order, and apparently they will adjust the aperture of G lenses. You're right that it was expensive, though, Niko. $300! (I think it's worth it.) They told me it would be available at the end of July.

There are Fmount to Emount adapters but they are manual focus only and Nikon G lenses wont work because they have no aperture ring on the lens. I suppose A third party could make an adapter with electronic contacts to opertate the aperture but it'll be very expensive.

What I want to know is whether I can attach my Nikkor lenses to the new Sony NEX-VG10.
I love Sony camcorders but am a bit worried that they've focused on the 'happy traveller' cheesy market for this one. I want to use this camera for some pretty funky stuff - so a variety of lenses is a must.

My personal favorites are the Nikon AF-S 14-24MM F2.8 Lens and the Nikon 24-70MM F2.8 G Lens

(Links to images here: http://www.tscamerahouse.com.au/nikon-af-s-24-70mm-f2-8g-ed-lens.html)

What do you think about attaching one of these to the camera?

I know you're right, but it's an artificial crippling of the camcorder, Niko. Some (granted, fewer) people would still by the still NEX cameras because they want something small. Not that the camcorder is big or anything, but it's significantly bigger.

Well Sony has to protect their sales of NEX still cameras don't they? Or else why buy the NEX 3 or 5 if a camcorder gave the same kind of still image quality (RAW).

I see the NEX VG10 as a camcorder first, still cam second. Something like the canon 5Dmk2 is a still cam first and camcorder second. So I think we are a few short years (maybe even months?!) away from seeing a completely integrated still/video camera. A camera that is capable of doing both seemlessly.

NikoDoby said:
Interesting that it takes 14mp stills at 7fps! This is the "same" sensor in the NEX 3 and 5 so we already know the still image quality is good.

The NEX3/5 also take 7fps stills, but they'll do it in raw format. The trade-off is AF is disabled during the burst, so it only makes sense for some situations. That's the biggest problem I see with the video camera is that the stills can't be saved in raw format. What's with that?

I ordered a Rayqual E-mount to F-mount adapter to put my nikkors on my NEX-5, and if the specs can be trusted (it hasn't come yet), it has an aperture ring to control Nikon G lenses. I'm not sure about AI lenses, studio. It seems like they were saying anything pre-FG-mount might not be compatible with the adapter. Even if they do rub, it would probably be an easy fix to file down the piece that's in the way.

edit: now I look at it again, I'm not sure it does the G lens aperture control. I was looking at the one for m4/3s. I'll email the company and find out.

Like I've said before if Nikon or canon come out with a 4K hybrid sill/video camera then RED is DEAD. I think it's interesting that Jim Jannard (RED Camera)said yesterday that his company is doing great and they are back on-schedule. Nice timing isn't it? He also said, "“if EPIC isn’t in the hands of many in 5 months, I’m in deep trouble”. Deep trouble indeed you are.

NikoDoby said:
It's a "DX" sized sensor like on the Nikon D90 and D5000 etc. So it has a crop factor of 1.5X just like Nikon DX lenses. So even if you use FX lenses the crop is still 1.5X. It's pretty exciting because you will actually be able to mount all sorts of different lenses to this camera via adapters. There are already Leica and Zeiss adapters for the E-mount.

Thanks for your reply! Really? So, that's better than the Panasonic AG-AF100, yes? The AG-AF100 is a micro-4/3rds chip with a 2.0x crop factor, am I correct? And, now we have the Sony NEX body with only a 1.5x crop factor--great! Although, I'm still unclear on the AI/non-AI compatibility issue (although that's actually fine, since I've already purchased a pile of all-manual focus, AI Nikkors in advance, specifically for filmmaking applications).

The NEX E-mount lenses are smaller than the A-mount (alpha/minolta). I don't believe there are any power zoomed E-mount lenses yet. You can mount Nikon glass to the E-mount via a "dumb" adapter (all manual). I'm not sure but I think there are plans for a third party adapter with electronic contacts for Nikon "G" lenses too. I don't know about the non-Ai glass but there are plenty of Ai and newer lenses you can use.

It's a "DX" sized sensor like on the Nikon D90 and D5000 etc. So it has a crop factor of 1.5X just like Nikon DX lenses. So even if you use FX lenses the crop is still 1.5X.
Interesting that it takes 14mp stills at 7fps! This is the "same" sensor in the NEX 3 and 5 so we already know the still image quality is good. I wonder about the rolling shutter though? I guess this is the "redefinition of photography" that Nikon's new Prez was talking about?

I just knew it! The game has changed . . . again.

2010: The Year of the V-DSLR in Camcorder Form-Factor

A. Panasonic micro-4/3rds AG-AF100 (announced 11 April 2010; projected launch date: end of Q4 2010).
B. Sony APS-C NEX-VG10 (announced 14 July 2010; projected launch date: Q3 2010).
C. Canon?
D. Nikon?
E. ?????

A couple of quick questions:

1. Are both the A- and E-mounts mechanically identical?
2. Are Nikon F-mount lenses adaptable to A-/E-mount bodies?
3. What is the crop factor using Nikon FX lenses?

I found two "Nikon AI" to Sony/Maxxum/Konica adapters online. Does this mean that modern, non-AI lenses aren't adaptable? I would only need mechanical/optical compatibility, from Nikkor to Sony. Also, I thought the crop factor was 2.0x? Is it actually only 1.5x?

PC World magazine reports that, "The Sony NEX-VG10 shoots 1920-by-1080 AVCHD video at 60 interlaced fields per second (you're fixed at that 60i frame rate) and maxes out at a 24mbps bit rate for video capture." However, I would assume that the camera records "24p over 60i" to retain a film-like, 24p frame-rate. And, a datarate of 24mbps, while not huge, is probably "adequate," especially if equipped with a modern, efficient, AVCHD CODEC, which the Sony is. Would also be interesting to know if the new camera also accommodates a 2:3:3:2 pull-down cadence as well.

NikoDoby said:
Could a similar "concept" camera be coming from Nikon but with internet connectivity?

Jeez, I sure as heck hope so! Nikon . . . game on!

Yes we had a Blog on a possible Pro Nikon Camcorder, but I would like to see Nikon get their act together and actual do like Sony and give us a bit of EVIL with a touch of EVIL style Camcorder

Sorry for how the word EVIL is used, neither Sony or Nikon are actual quoted to be Evil, I am only making fun of the actual camera terminology

EVIL stands for "Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens"
